Top 'Cinco' for Cinco de Mayo

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo all weekend with festivals, family outings and nightlife celebrations.

Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It is not Mexican Independence Day, as some people believe. That date falls on September 16.

While the day is mostly celebrated in the state of Pueblo in Mexico, the holiday has been adopted as a celebration of Mexican pride and heritage by Mexican-Americans in the U.S. Throughout the country, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with festivals and gatherings.

1. Event:

This ASL interpreted event is a fiesta appropriate for the entire family with traditional crafts for kids, light refreshments and entertainment from Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno.

2. Event: Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Kaama Lounge

When: Thursday, May 5, at 6 p.m.

Where: Kaama Lounge

385 S. Winchester Blvd., San Jose

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Fuel’s old location near Santana Row. Happy hour, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. boasts half off appetizers, $3 beers, $5 well drinks and select $5 Kaama cocktails. Valet parking is available for $4.

3. Event: Cinco de Mayo at

When: Friday, May 6, at 6 p.m.

Where:

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at Swiss Park with a concert by the Trio Orion, dancing to the Karl Lebherz Band following the concert and an adjoining restaurant and bar.

 4. Event: San Francisco Giant’s Pre-Game Cinco de Mayo Celebration

When: Friday, May 6, 4:30 p.m.

Where: AT&T Park

24 Willie Mays Plaza, San Francisco

Celebrate with the Giants as they battle the Rockies for the special Cinco de Mayo Celebration Night at the ball park.

5. Event:

When: Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: 

1530 167th Ave., San Leandro

Celebrate with a festival supported by the Community Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems, CommPre. The event will include free food, raffles, traditional Mexican entertainment and a health resource fair.
