The suspect then pointed the gun at the officers, according to Horner.

"In defense of their lives officers fired their weapons shooting the suspect several times," Horner wrote in a press release.

A loaded handgun was found at the scene, police said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital via ambulance where he was pronounced dead shortly after, according to police.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office has not yet released the suspect's identity, police said Sunday morning.

The two officers involved in the shooting were put on administrative leave, per department policy.

The Union City Police Department and Alameda County District Attorney's Office will investigate the incident.
