Fifteen Local Restaurants Offer Samples
The Union City Lion's Club, in partnership with fifteen Union City Restaurants, held its third annual Restaurant Stroll last night. For $15, attendees had the opportunity to sample dishes from each restaurant. The Stroll was held at 5:30 pm at Union Landing. With around 300 people in attendance, it was a sold-out event that raised approximately $4,500. The Lion's Club will use all of the money to support Union City and its residents. "[The money] will be returned to the community through grants to deserving organizations," said Lion's Club President Tony Acosta. Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up and the first 40 players on each team get to play. Hosted by the Food Truck Mafia, the event is a fundraiser for the New Haven Teachers Association and runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m. The Food Truck Mafia also hosts Union City Street Eats Thursday nights at Union Landing. The third annual 5K/10K Race to Save Student Activities had more than 250 participants and raised just under $10,000 for sports and music in the New Haven Unified School District.
Last week's 5k/10k Race to Save Student Activities was another success for the New Haven Unified School District, raising just under $10,000 to benefit endangered sports and music programs. A total of 261 participants turned out for the run, which began at the Cesar Chavez Middle School track and continued along the Alameda Creek Regional Trail. Sponsors of the event, which was hosted by the New Haven Boosters Association included Tri-CED Community Recycling, Washington Hospital, Fremont Bank, Masonic Homes of California, the Lions Club of Union City, Texas Roadhouse restaurant, OfficeMax, and many others. Eight students from Alameda County were selected to participate in the California State Science Fair this past week, including one from Union City. Of the eight, six brought home major awards.
A number of students from the Tri-Cities are celebrating a job well done this week, as they just returned from participating in the California State Science Fair last week. Eight students from throughout the area competed in the Alameda County Science and Engineering Fair (ACSEF) in March, and advanced to the state competition this past week. The students competed with close to 1,000 others with winning projects from their own counties from all over California. Impressively, six out of the eight Alameda County students who participated took home awards from the state fair. The Kids' Zone, a new coalition of local community groups and government agencies, aims to provide "cradle-to-career" support for Union City's at-risk youth population.
A new citywide program that aims to provide critical support for at-risk youth will celebrate its launch with a community event this weekend. The Union City Kids’ Zone, which boasts “cradle-to-career” services for local students, will hold its Community Health Fair and Flea Market this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Searles Elementary School. In addition to health services and flea market vendors, the community event will also feature a jewelry sales fundraiser and the Safe Routes to School BikeMobile where students can fix up their bikes and learn maintenance and safety tips. The school district is considering adjusting start times to alleviate morning traffic near school sites.
The following is a press release from New Haven Unified School District: Recognizing that traffic has increased on city streets since state budget cuts forced the discontinuation of bus transportation for students, the New Haven Unified School District is considering adjusting school start times for the 2012-13 school year. Currently, elementary students begin school at 8 a.m., James Logan High students start at 8:15 a.m., and middle school students begin at 8:30 a.m.. In other words, parents who have children at more than one school have 15 minutes to get from site to site.
