Funeral Services Set for Osana Futi

A viewing is scheduled for Thursday and a memorial service is planned for Friday for Osana Futi, a Newark student who was stabbed and killed in late April.

Funeral services for a slain Newark student have been finalized for this week. The community is invited to both the viewing and memorial service for Newark Memorial High School senior Osana Futi, who died April 29 after succumbing to injuries he sustained from a stabbing the night before. He was 18. A viewing will be held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Memorial Chapel, 3723 Peralta Blvd. in Fremont. A memorial service will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. at the Newark Memorial High School Event Center, 39375 Cedar Blvd. in Newark. Those close to the Futi family are continuing to hold fundraisers to help the Futi family pay for memorial services. Relatives intend to transport Futi’s body to Samoa for a burial ceremony in his homeland …

Newark Memorial High school senior and football player Osana Futi was remembered in a candlelight vigil Monday night that drew in a crowd of hundreds. Family and friends remember the life of an 18-year-old Newark student who was fatally stabbed late Saturday night.

Hanging inside Osana Futi’s room is a cap and gown. A cap and gown that signals a graduation that is 40 days away. A cap and gown that will never be worn. The Newark Memorial High School senior’s life was cut short by violence Saturday night after he succumbed to injuries early Sunday that he sustained during a fight that turned into a reported stabbing outside of a house party in Fremont’s Blacow District on Saturday. Final Farewells for Oikos University Victim Grace Eunhae Kim

ABC 7 Bay Area reports on a memorial service held Friday in memory of one of the victims killed in the Oikos University mass shooting.

Union City resident Grace Eunhae Kim was remembered Friday as thousands gathered at a church in Fremont for a memorial service in her name. Family and friends grieved the passing of the 23-year-old, whose life was cut short with a suspected gunman entered Oikos University in Oakland on April 2 and began shooting, killing seven. Loved ones have talked about her infectious laugh and charismatic personality. In the video above, Kim's brother, Paul Kim, remembers his sister as a sibling who was always there for him and spoke about her dreams of providing for her family. Loved Ones Celebrate Life of Oikos Shooting Victim Lydia Sim

More than 100 people attended a service at the Hayward Korean Baptist Church Wednesday night for 21-year-old Lydia Sim, one of seven victims of the Oikos University shooting.

The life of 21-year-old Lydia H. Sim was commemorated at the Hayward Korean Baptist Church where more than 100 gathered Wednesday night. Sim, a former Union City resident, was one of the seven people killed in the Oikos University shooting on Monday.  Happy memories of Sim was the main topic at her memorial service. Friends say they remember her as the girl with a big smile, a ray of sunshine that also brought out smiles from others. Sim's young life was unexpectedly taken when she was caught in the middle of a shooting rampage at Oikos University on Monday. Friends Remember Oikos Shooting Victims From Tri-City

Grace Eunhea Kim, 23, of Union City and Lydia H. Sim, 21, of Hayward were among the seven people killed in a violent rampage Monday.

Grace Eunhae Kim was supposed to clock in for work Monday afternoon at Chaplin’s Sports Bistro in Union City. While Kim, who also worked at Newark’s BJs Restaurant, was never late for work, her friends and co-workers prayed for the best as news surfaced of a mass shooting at Oikos University in Oakland. The 23-year-old Union City resident was a nursing student attending class at the university when a gunman went on a rampage throughout the small campus Monday morning. Seven people died and three were injured. Among the victims was Lydia H. UPDATE: Logan Alumna, Fremont Resident Among Victims of Oakland Shooting

One woman was a Fremont resident who worked at BJ's Restaurant and Brewery in Newark, the other grew up in Union City and was a Class of 2009 James Logan High School graduate who also worked in Newark.

Editor's note: This report was updated at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday Newark, Calif. — While officials have yet to release the identities of the seven people killed in a mass shooting in Oakland Monday, two of them are believed to have ties to the Tri-City area. Close friends have told Newark Patch that Grace Eunhae Kim, 23, lived in Fremont and Lydia Sim, 21, of Hayward, had attended high school in Union City. Officials from the Alameda County coroner's office said they expect to release the victims' identities by the end of Tuesday. Kim was also an employee at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewery in Newark. Union City's Oldest Resident Passes Away

Antonio Zendejas, 106, passed away Feb. 29.

Antonio Zendejas, who at 106 was Union City's oldest living resident, passed away the morning of Feb. 29. "He lived a good, full, and rich life," one of Zendejas' great granddaugthers told Union City Patch contributor Richgail Enriquez. "How many people are fortunate to live so long and be in good health?" According to an online obituary, Zendejas was born in 1905 in Michoacán, Mexico. He married Otilia Tapia Luna in 1925 and moved to Texas shortly after. He bounced around the U.S. before settling in Union City in 1945. He lived in the same house up until his passing. Zendejas is survived by six children, 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. Union City Patch was fortunate enough to catch up with …

Pedestrian Killed in Hit-and-Run ‘Loved by Community’

Friends remember Henry Rodriguez, 40, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident Sunday morning.

Henry Rodriguez, Jr. usually didn’t go to work on Sunday mornings until 8 or 9 a.m. On Jan. 22, he left his brother’s Union City home near Mann Avenue early. His niece’s first birthday celebration was that day, so was the 49ers NFC Conference Championship match. The warm-hearted 40-year-old sports fan didn’t want to miss either event, friends said. But in the short amount of time it takes for Rodriguez, who was mentally disabled, to walk to the nearby Bakery La Mejor in the Safeway shopping center, something tragic happened. According to police, Rodriguez was struck by a car near the intersection of Alvarado-Niles Road and Union Square Drive shortly after 6 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
