Week Ahead: 9/11 Memorial Service, History Tour, A Taste of Union City

Heads up! Here are five events taking place this week that you don’t want to miss.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Join the community in remembrance of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at Union City's Flight 93 Memorial, located at Sugar Mill Landing Park at 30700 Carr Way at the corner of Alvarado-Niles Road and Dyer Street, at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The event honors those whose lives were taken and will include songs, a prayer, a reading of the names of the victims and more.

A Taste of Union City: Food, Blues and World Music Festival

See all that Union City has to offer this Saturday at the inaugural Taste of Union City festival. The daylong event boasts three stages of live music featuring blues, r&b, jazz, gospel, dance and world music, along with a car show, games, local food vendors, cooking demonstrations and more. The event begins with a kick-off parade at 8 a.m., with festival gates opening at 9 a.m. Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids. Tickets at the gate will cost $20 for adults and $12 for children.

Union City Farmers' Market

If it's Saturday in Union City, then you already know what time it is: Farmers' Market time! The market, held at Old Alvarado-Cesar Chavez Park, opens at 9 a.m. with fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and other food items from local farmers. Bring cash and like the Union City Farmers Market on Facebook for special deals and coupons.

History Tour of Dry Creek Cottage and Gardens

Explore more than 200 native and exotic plants at Dry Creek Cottage and Gardens in the Mission Hills along the Union City-Hayward border at a special tour this Saturday at 1 p.m. Local historian Timothy Swenson will lead the tour of the site, which was built in 1900. Also, visitors will learn how to preserve the land the historic cottage and gardens sit upon.

Ballet Folklorico at the Fremont Main Library

Celebrate Mexican heritage with El Ballet Folklorico de James Logan High School as they perform traditional dances from Mexico. The event, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fremont Main Library.
