Bains is being recognized as one of dozens of local heroes from throughout Wieckowski's district. The award is only one of many accolades he has received since being an active Union City community servant.

Of all his accomplishments, he said one of his greatest has been his participation on the city’s 50th anniversary board last year.

“I am most proud of the diversity of our community,” Bains emphasized. “Here we have lots of Indians, Mexicans, Filipinos and we all live together peacefully. I have never seen any discrimination or anything like that in Union City."

Giving back to the community should be a priority for everyone, including young people, Bains said.

“Work hard and don’t just follow the prospect of being successful,” he added.  “And once you are successful, don’t forget to give back.”

The awards ceremony will be held today from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Performing Arts at James Logan High School on 1800 H Street in Union City.
