Community Corner

The 4th annual Bay Bombs car show brings community to Kennedy Park.

If low and slow American muscle is what you like, then Saturday's cars show at was the place to be. The event featured live music, vendor booths and more shiny chrome than you can shake a stick at.

Now in its fourth year, the annual event is the primary fundraiser for the Union City car club's "Cruisin' for Higher Education" scholarship.

Formed in Union City in 2002, the club, which also has a chapter in Contra Costa County, is dedicated to "bombs" — cars manufactured between the 1930s and 1950s which people said resembled military bombs.

But the annual celebration is not limited to just members' rides. The event showcases cars from anyone who wishes to register.

"It's a lot of work for us, but this is a great event," said Bay Bombs club member Juan Macias.

The show bounced back and forth between a nearby school and Kennedy Park in its first couple of years but has called Kennedy park home for the last two years.

More than 100 community members came out to gaze at the cool rides, relax in the park with their families and enjoy oldies tunes performed by a live band.
