YFS Celebrates 5th Anniversary with Concert at Kennedy Park

Union City's Youth and Family Services (YFS) is celebrating it's 5th anniversary by sponsoring a free concert at the amphitheater at Kennedy Park on July 26, from 1 pm to 5 pm. A number of local bands have signed up for the show including, Into The Pacific, Jupiter7, Laura Rae, Astralogik, GSII, and Chris Petallano. The concert will be at the amphitheater in the south west corner of Kennedy Park.

The Youth and Family Services was created in the summer of 2009 by the City Council. The group was formed in reaction to a number of incidents of youth violence that had hit Union City the two previous years. The mission of YFS is "Working together with youth and families to help them strengthen and maintain loving relationships, as well as promote a safe community that thrives. " This mission is comprised of the following goals: " strengthen family relationships ; promote positive decision making ; improve school attendance and performance ; identify available options and resources ; develop alternatives to violence; learn tools and strategies to address challenging youth behaviors."Β

The YFS has had Call-In's where youth that are heading down the wrong path are provided with services that can get them back on the right path, including finding them employment and encouraging them to finish High School, and provide counseling services. YFS is also the sponsor of an annual youth basketball tournament in Contemp Park.
