Save Our Hills Rally - July 11

On July 11, Save Our Hills, a group of Union City residents organized to prevent development on protected open space, organized a rally at Whipple Road and Mission Blvd.  The rally was designed to inform local residents of the forthcoming ballot to remove the flat lands on Mission Blvd from Hillside Area and allow development on the lands.

In 1996, the Union City voters passed Measure II that created the Hillside Area, composed on the hills and flat lands, and zoned them as Open Space.  The measure made sure that any changes to the zoning would have to be approved by the voters.

The flat lands along Mission Blvd are the last major tract of agricultural land in Union City.  Both Alvarado and Decoto (who formed Union City in 1959) were founded on agriculture.  Up until incorporation, farms dominated the landscape of Union City.  Street names like Decoto, Whipple, Horner, and Dyer honor those early farmers.
