NHUSD Logo History

The New Haven Unified School District logo is fairly well know to those that attend the district or read about the district on the web. The logo shows five stylized people of different colors, holding hands around a globe, with a small map of Union City in the globe. The words Equity, Stability and Quality finish the circle started by the people. The logo is used extensively by the district including on the side of school owned vehicles.

To come up with a logo, normally a school district would pay a design firm or marketing consultant. In the case of the NHUSD logo, the path to the logo was much simpler. In a June, 1977, article in The Argus newspaper, a very short article mentioned that Thomas Schumann had designed the logo. Thomas was an Alvarado School student, and for his troubles he was awarded $50 to be used for educational materials for any class that he chose. The article said that the five people represent "the five ethnic groups making up the districts student body."

The article was very short, but I can only assume that some contest was held in the district, asking the students to design a new logo. Here is it 36 years later and the logo is basically the same. A good investment of $50 for NHUSD.
