Decoto Centennial Celebration

On August 5th, Union City and local non-profit groups organized a one day celebration of Decoto turning 100 years. The banner over E Street advertised "Fun, Food, Frolic" and "Parade, Carnival, Dances". The recently reworked and repaved E Street was the site of the big event. The parade down E Street had a total of 90 different floats and groups both local and from local towns like Hayward, Newark, and Castro Valley. Local stores like F & B Market, Nino's Family Restaurant, and the Union City Leader newspaper had a place in the parade. The most interesting entree was Elle the Elephant from the James Brothers Circus. Different non-profits had booths with games, food, and a dunk tank. They were placed along E Street, which was blocked off from 3rd to 6th Streets. A sampling of the groups sponsoring the booths are: Union City Athletic Club, Boy Scout Troop 268 & 177, Comision Honorifica Mexicana, New Haven Unified Teachers Association, and Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid. The schedule for the day was the Dedication of the renovated E Street by Mayor Bernie Morales at 10:30 a.m., parade at 11:00 a.m., games from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., square and folk dancing from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and street dancing from 8:00 to Midnight. The Union City Leader ran a Special Edition advertising the Centennial Celebration in big bold letters on the front page. The article in the Union City Leader that covered Decoto's history started off with this phrase; "Promoters dreamed up a big-city scheme when they bought land that gave the town of Decoto its start back in 1870." It was not documented in the newspaper at the time, but in 1867, the Decoto brothers purchased land in the area and started farming. It was not until years later that the Decoto name was associated with the town that was growing up around the railroad tracks.
