History Blog: Union City Spring Parade

Union City Chamber of Commerce used to sponsor the Union City Spring Parade.

Starting in 1960, the Union City Chamber of Commerce sponsored a parade that signaled the beginning of the Little League season. The parade went through Decoto, ending at Logan High School, where judges were in place to award prizes for the best units and floats. Newspaper clipping for a few of the years provide the details about the parade.

In 1962, 50 units marched in the parade on May 12. The parade started next to City Hall at 309 H Street in Decoto, then marched down H Street to Logan High School. The grand marshal was Alameda County Supervior John D. Murphy. The James Logan High School Colts marching band and the Decoto School District marching band were the two bands in the parade. Local civic organizations like the Alvarado 4-H, Sociedad Internacional Mexicana, Comision Honorifica Mexicana, and the Filipino Community of Alameda County were represented in the parade.

In 1963, the number of units had dropped to 39. The Logan marching band won the award in the musical unit division. Girl Scout Troop #77 of Union City won in the marching unit division.

In 1965, Alameda County Sheriff Frank Madigan served as the grand marshal. There were 61 units marching in the parade, with almost 600 individual participants. At the end of the parade, the City dedicated the new Union City Memorial Park, on the southeast corner of the Logan campus. A carnival was also held on the west end of the high school grounds.

The last year documented for the parade is 1965. A few years later a new parade was started with Fiesta Days.
