FLOUR MILL
Union City was the location of the first flour mill of any size, established within the limits of the state, this being also an enterprise of John and William Horner. It was built in 1853, having a run of eight hours at the cost of $85,000. The mill was operated by steam power and samples of flour made from California grain at "Horner's Mill at Union Citty" was awarded the premium of excellence by New York merchants. This mill operated for many years before it was abandoned and moved to its new site. its size was increased under the ownership of George Tay & Co., who in 1870 established in the mill building a foundry. The business was a success giving employment to thirty-five men and dispursed about $4,000 a month to the employees.
