On July 8 and 9, more than 100 people from all over the world flocked to James Logan High School to compete in the 2011 61st Annual Kajukenbo Self Defense Institute Open Karate Tournament.
It was the first time the event was held in Union City, said Liza Macalolooy of Union City-based mixed martial arts studio. Usually, students raise funds to travel outside of the Bay Area for the tournament, she said.
"It's just great that it's here in our hometown," she said.
Each year, participants of all ages flex their skills to see who's the best in kajukenbo, a mixed martial art founded by Sijo Adriano Emperado in the '40s that combines boxing, kenpo karate, judo, jiu-jitsu, kung fu and other fighting techniques.
The event also featured a seminar in which Dragons Den founder Jeff Macalolooy taught lessons alongside grand masters from across the country.
