Colts Begin Playoff Push in Several Sports

Girls volleyball and tennis teams among the best in the Mission Valley Athletic League.

Mission Valley Athletic League competition is in full swing in all sports and for the first time in recent history, there won't be league playoffs as the MVAL athletic directors voted 6-1 against them according to league commissioner Tom Breen. That puts more importance on the league schedule for teams vying to make the North Coast Section playoffs this year.

The Logan girls volleyball team is 4-2 in MVAL action and a half-game behind first-place Irvington (4-1).  Logan is a half-game ahead of third-place. The Colts used to be perennial league powers and have a rich postseason tradition. The Colts, who last won North Coast Section titles in 1991 and 1992, went 11-13 overall last year and suffered a first-round Division I loss to league foe Washington in the NCS playoffs.

The girls tennis team, which traditionally battles Mission San Jose for the league title, has suffered a setback the past few years, but is always competitive in the MVAL. Logan is battling American (3-1) and Irvington (3-2) for second place. The Colts are 3-2 entering the midway point of the league season. Mission is a perfect 5-0.
