Volunteers Needed for ‘Stuff the Bus’

The school supply collection event will be held at Walmart from Aug. 17 to 19.

The New Haven Unified School District is looking for volunteers to help at this year’s “Stuff the Bus” school supply donation drive.

The weekend-long event will be held from Aug. 17 to 19 at . During “Stuff the Bus,” Walmart customers can purchase items from a list of supplies to help fill donation bins throughout the store and “stuff” a New Haven school bus parked outside.

While donation bins will be left out throughout the weekend, the district is looking for volunteers to promote the school supply collection drive during the store’s high-volume hours between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

According to the district:

Volunteers will greet customers and hand out fliers, staff the bins to collect donations and thank donors, and sort supplies as they are brought to the bus. Volunteers will be asked to work a three-hour shift, either from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., or from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The 10-1 and 4-7 time slots Friday are full, but there are openings in all other shifts.

Those interested in helping out for “Stuff the Bus” may email New Haven Unified School District Director of Parent and Community Relations Rick La Plante at rlaplante@nhusd.k12.ca.us with the desired shift.

Though the district can not offer community service hours for students, it does welcome students volunteers who are accompanied by parents, La Plante said.
