STAR-Test Cheating In Other Districts Delays Scores

STAR-test results, typically mailed to parents in July, are delayed, due to possible social-media cheating discovered by the California Department of Education. 

The investigation has delayed the release of Standardized Testing and Reporting results, or STAR results, by two weeks, according to the Contra Costa Times.

California schools administer STAR tests to children in grades two through 11 to assess performance in reading, writing, math, science and history. 

The security breach involves 442 images from tests given at 12 schools, were posted online, the Department of Education announced Wednesday. Some appeared on Facebook.

Department of Education spokeswoman Pam Slater told the Contra Costa Times that only 36 images showed actual test items; the rest pictured test-taking locations.

While the posted images did not contain test items or completed answers, the CDE undertook a concerted analyses of any impact the security breaches may have had on test results to ensure integrity of scores, said Deborah V.H. Sigman, deputy superintendent of public instruction district, school and innovation branch of the state Department of Education.

The test results, normally released in mid-August, will come out at the end of August. The leak will also affect the release of API scores in the fall.
