Repairs To Be Completed At Junior High School's Pool

The Newark Unified Board of Education voted to approve a $60,000 contract for repairs and renovations for the pool at Newark Junior High School.

’s swimming pool will soon undergo repairs and renovations totaling $60,000.

The Newark Unified Board of Education voted 4-1 to approve a contract for National Aquatics to repair a leak from the pool’s sump pump pit and replace its floor surface.

Board member Jan Crocker voted against the contract after she said she would rather the project focus on the repair of the leak than the additional step to replace the floor surface in order to save costs.

Other board members said they were in favor of replacing the floor surface and the pools edges in order to prevent greater costs in the future.

Approval of the contract was required because Paramount Pools, which had been the previous contractor for the job, canceled services after bonds were unable to be produced by that company.

Also at the board’s Sept. 27 meeting:

  • The board approved replacing the child nutrition vehicle used to transport food and provide catering services. Board members unanimously voted to purchase a 2011 Ford van for $23,585.
  • Board members discussed the district’s policies on intradistrict open enrollment and interdistrict attendance. Action was not taken on either topic.

The board meets again at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Click here to download the board agenda or see the attached PDF.

Faye have you been eavesdropping on my phone calls. Your point about the cost to run the pool, were the same comments I made, during the phone calls with two of my friends today.

Whats really odd is we are 50th in per pupil spending. I find it hard to believe we are spending 50% of the state budget on education I should look into this myself, maybe I'm wrong.

Waste of Money. When I attended NJHS the only thing I remember kids using it for was to Urinate in. Oh and this one kid named William who hawked Loogies into it. Ah memories.

Thanks Geoff, I may do just that. Also, its a mandate under state law to allocate that much. Disconcerting isn't it? @James, that's amazing too, how awful!
