Hundreds of New Haven Unified students will take a bold step into the future of learning when they’re given Google Chromebooks starting this week.

The informational meetings will include an overview of the district’s 21st century learning goals, an overview of the Chromebooks and their intended use, and information about purchasing insurance and low-cost internet.

The laptops will be rolled out to all students over a period of three years. The initial rollout will impact about one-third of New Haven’s 12,500 students, the district said.

The new technology is part of a district initiative funded by the federal Race to the Top grant.

New Haven was awarded a $29 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education last December. The funds, which will be received over a four-and-a-half year period, are being used to improve student learning.

The Chromebooks are small, affordable notebook computers that run on Google’s Chrome operating system and web-based applications. The notebooks are made to use while connected to the internet with all data stored in the “cloud.”

New Haven officials say the Chromebooks will help meet the district’s goals of personalizing student education, improving student achievement and teacher effectiveness, and preparing students for college and careers.
