New Haven Accepting Applications for School Board Vacancy

The new board member will take the seat being left vacant by trustee Kevin Harper, whose resignation is effective Dec. 31

Applications are now available for a soon-to-be vacant seat on the Board of Education

The new appointee would take the seat being left vacant by trustee Kevin Harper in January. due to his moving out of the district. His resignation is effective Dec. 31.

The position will be a temporary appointment as Harper’s term is set to expire next November. The seat will be one of three open seats placed on the November 2012 election ballot.

The application for the position went online today on the school district’s website and must be turned in no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. Applicants must be residents of the school district, which serves all of Union City and a portion of south Hayward.

Applicants must fill out the document electronically and print and forward a copy to the district to the attention of Senior Executive Assistant Lori Valdes. Completed applications can also be faxed to 510-471-7108 or mailed to 34200 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City, 94587.

Eligible candidates will be announced publicly, with interviews in front of the Board of Education to be held on Nov. 29.  Once a decision is made, the new appointee will be seated in January.

According to the school district website, board members help guide the vision of the school district. Among board responsibilities are adopting a balanced budget, adopting school calendars, approving curriculum materials and other duties.
