Nearly 9 of 10 Sophomores Pass High School Exit Exam

Nearly nine out of 10 New Haven tenth graders who took the California High School Exit Examination in 2011-12 passed, according to results released by the state Department of Education.

The local school district had the second highest percentage within the Tri-Cities, just slightly behind Fremont and slightly above Newark. Each district in the Tri-Cities scored higher than the state and county averages.

Students — who first take the test in 10th grade — must pass the exit exam by 12th grade in order to earn a high school diploma.

In the New Haven Unified School District:

• 88 percent of sophomores passed the math portion of the exam
• 89 percent of sophomores passed the English Language Arts portion of the exam

In the Fremont Unified School District:

• 90 percent of sophomores passed the math portion of the exam
• 91 percent of sophomores passed the English Language Arts portion of the exam

In the Newark Unified School District:

• 86 percent of sophomores passed the math portion of the exam
• 84 percent of sophomores passed the English Language Arts portion of the exam

Alameda County

• 84 percent of students tested passed the math portion of the test.
• 84 percent of students tested passed the English portion of the test.

California

• 84 percent of students tested passed the math portion of the test.
• 83 percent of students tested passed the English portion of the test.

The preliminary results that were released Wednesday include data from tests that were administered in July, October, November and December of 2011 and February, March and May of 2012.
