UPDATE: More Than 1,000 Measure H Supporters Expected to Rally Saturday

The $180 per parcel tax measure would raise $12 million for the district over a period of four years.

More than 1,000 students, parents, teachers, district staff and community members are expected to march Tomorrow morning in support of — a June 5 parcel tax measure that aims to mitigate the cuts forced upon on the New Haven Unified School District by the state — according to district officials.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the parking lot. Participants will march 2.5 miles together to the rally, which will be at held at 11 a.m. outside of in Union Landing.

Students and local government officials are expected to give speeches during the rally at 11 a.m., according to an announcement released by Measure H campaign members Friday afternoon.

According to the ballot statement, the four-year $180 per parcel tax would raise $3 million a year to “support high-quality local elementary, middle and high school education to prepare students for college and careers with outstanding core academic programs in reading, writing, math and science and highly qualified teachers and classified staff."

The funds would not be used for administrators' salaries and will include optional exemptions for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

It will require a two-thirds majority vote.
