Logan Girls Water Polo Make History — Again

After winning their first league title last year, the girls returned with a flawless 10-0 season.

There’s something in the water at James Logan High School — pure talent.

The girls water polo team recently made history yet again.

After winning their first Mission Valley Athletic League title last year, the girls came back even harder this season, not only snagging another league title but closing with an undefeated 10-0 record for the first time in the school’s history, according to coach Martin Munoz.

“We entered the league this year knowing that every team would be hungry to knock us off our perch atop the league,” Munoz said.

But the Logan girls were hungrier.

According to Munoz, Logan outscored their opponents 132 to 18.

The girls clinched the MVAL title last month with an 11-3 win over the second ranking team, Mission San Jose, and advanced to the North Coast Section playoffs as the sixth ranking team.

They opened with an 11-4 win over Deer Valley High School of Antioch.

Next up was Clayton Valley of Concord, the third ranking team in the NCS and one of the top teams in the Bay Area, according to Munoz.

Though the competition was stiff, the Logan girls pulled off an 8-7 "upset," Munoz said.

In the NCS semi-finals on Nov. 7, the girls faced Monte Vista High School of Danville — described by Munoz as a “perennial power.”

“Our defense did a good job of keeping their high-powered offense to only eight goals but we could not muster up enough offense against their strong defense,” Munoz said.

The team’s magical season came to a halt with an 8-3 loss.

Logan Junior Tayler Peters was named the league MVP.

Junior Geneva Foronda, senior Taylor Manning, Tayler Peters and junior Amy Tolbertson were also named 1st Team All League players, with senior Emily Fletcher and Arin Ledesma named 2nd Team All League players.

Though the season was the last for seniors Lisa Burpee, Emily Fletcher, Arin Ledesma and Taylor Manning, Munoz said the team is ready to pull off a three-peat next year.

“We will return with three First Team All Leaguers, along with a ton of other hungry young players eager to replicate the previous year's success,” Munoz said.

Munoz said the girls’ historic back-to-back seasons have inspired younger girls in the community to get involved in the sport.

“We are excited about the future of water polo at James Logan and Union City in general,” Munoz said. “We run a bunch of youth camps and through word of mouth we visibly see more kids enrolling in swim teams and aquatics programs in the city."

"It's exciting for our coaching staff to see young kids in our community talking about and participating in water polo at such a young age.”
