Logan Girls Basketball Game to Honor Zoe Inciong Tonight

"Ballin' for Zoe" doubles as a fundraiser for the Zoe Inciong Memorial Scholarship and the Zoe Means Life scholarship.

The memory of local teen Zoe Inciong continues to live on thanks to the efforts of her friends and loved ones.

Tonight, the James Logan High School girl’s basketball team will host a special “Ballin’ for Zoe” event during their match against Newark Memorial.

The junior varsity match begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity match at 7:15 p.m. A special tribute will be held between the games, according to Zoe’s mother, Maria Inciong.

Zoe played junior varsity basketball her freshman year, Maria Inciong told Patch on Monday — exactly seven months since her passing on July 5, 2012.

Zoe passed away shortly after her 16th birthday after a long fight with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

“When events like this happen, it helps,” Maria Inciong said. “We find comfort knowing that her life means something, and that her spirit continues to live on.”

The two scholarships will also ensure that Zoe’s legacy continues in the community.

The Zoe Inciong Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to graduating scholar athletes through the New Haven Pilipino American Society for Education. The family plans to award $2,000 in scholarships, either as two $1,000 awards or four $500 awards, Maria Inciong said.

The Zoe Means Life Scholarship will be awarded to students who face medical challenges. Before her passing, Zoe also said that she would like to help students in similar situations as her, Maria Inciong said. A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a local student at the end of the year.

Zoe’s family received an out-pour of support during Zoe’s fight with cancer, and after her passing. Her family created So Things Don’t Suck, an emergency fund for Zoe that has since been used for philanthropic efforts in her honor.

Last year, Zoe’s family gave out $500 worth of gift cards to patients at the Oakland Kaiser Pediatric Oncology center, where Zoe received treatment.

For those unable to attend “Ballin’ for Zoe” but would still like to contribute to the scholarship funds, checks can be made out to the New Haven Pilipino American Society for Education for the Zoe Memorial Scholarship or to the New Haven Schools Foundation for the Zoe Means Life Scholarships.

Checks should be mailed to 30530 Del Valle Pl, Union City, CA 94587.
