Union City Wins Award for "Building a Better Bay Area"

Association of Bay Area Governments showcases Intermodal Station District Project

From the City of Union City

On April 12, the City of Union City was presented the Association of Bay Area Governments’ (ABAG) Building a Better Bay Area - Urban Design Award for the project.

The City’s Intermodal Station is the center point of a robust, transit-oriented community with development opportunities to the east and west sides of the BART station that brings residents and businesses together with local and regional transportation systems. Surrounding the station are high-density housing, retail shopping, commercial business, industrial land, and open space - all in close proximity to I-880, AC Transit, and the Dumbarton Express. Landscaped pedestrian walkways and bike paths make it both convenient and enjoyable for residents and workers to leave the car behind and reduce carbon emissions.

“The City is very proud of the recognition received by ABAG. The development of the Station District will transform former industrial acreage into a vibrant, integrated neighborhood that will enable residents to live, work, shop and play in the same area,” said Larry Cheeves, City Manager, City of Union City. “The project was designed to protect the environment and improve the quality of life.”

ABAG’s Growing Smarter Together Awards Program showcases planning and development at the local level that advance smart or “focused” growth in the Bay Area. The Awards recognize excellence in planning and development by local governments, who demonstrate a significant commitment to achieving the regional planning goals of the Bay Area vision and focused growth principles being advanced in the FOCUS Initiative. FOCUS is a regional development and conservation strategy that promotes a more compact land use pattern for the Bay Area.

The awards program showcased county and city/town program/project oriented work and elected officials, who have taken actions that demonstrate a significant commitment to achieving the regional planning goal of “complete communities.” The awards single out counties and cities and towns that meet the day-to-day needs of residents and promote conservation efforts that protect vital natural, scenic, and agricultural resource areas. There is also a distinguished leadership category which honors an elected official. Individual local governments or groups of jurisdictions working in partnership may submit nominations for the regional Growing Smarter Together Awards.
