Sports Center to be Rededicated in Honor of Mark Green

A ceremony will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Center.

Mark Green, the longest serving mayor in Union City’s history, will be honored Wednesday when one of his most heralded projects — the Union City Sports Center — is renamed after him.

The fitness facility will be rededicated as the Mark Green Sports Center.

Green, who served as Union City’s mayor for 19 years before being termed out in December, was instrumental in the creation of the sports center in 2007 where he has since been a common fixture.

“I go there several times a week myself,” Green said. “A lot of people think it’s is the greatest thing that happened to Union City because it provides a great location for people to keep healthy.”

The City Council voted in favor of renaming the sports center in Green’s honor in January.
