Mark Green, the longest serving mayor in Union City’s history, will be honored Wednesday when one of his most heralded projects — the Union City Sports Center — is renamed after him.
The fitness facility will be rededicated as the Mark Green Sports Center.
Green, who served as Union City’s mayor for 19 years before being termed out in December, was instrumental in the creation of the sports center in 2007 where he has since been a common fixture.
According to the City of Union City:
Former Mayor Green was a tireless champion of physical fitness, sports and Leisure Services programs, and the development of parks and recreation facilities (among many other things). When the City conducted its first, and to date only, Park & Recreation Master Plan in the late 1990’s, former Mayor Green saw to it that the key infrastructure elements of the plan, including a Senior Center.
Green himself championed the sports center, naming it as one of his biggest accomplishments in an interview with Patch in December.
“I go there several times a week myself,” Green said. “A lot of people think it’s is the greatest thing that happened to Union City because it provides a great location for people to keep healthy.”
The City Council voted in favor of renaming the sports center in Green’s honor in January.
The rededication ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the sports center, located at 31224 Union City Blvd.
