1st Annual Make A Difference in the Community Awards

The Union City Human Relations Commission will present the 1st Annual Make A Difference in the Community Awards at its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the City Council Chambers located in .

The awards recognize residents who have made a positive difference in the lives of others and have made Union City a better place to live, work and play.

The community is invited to attend and help honor this year’s inaugural awardees:

  • Richard Valle, President and CEO of , California’s largest non-profit community recycling company.
  • Juan Gomez, President of the Board of Directors for the , a community health center founded in Union City, with clinics in the Decoto and at James Logan High School.
  • Cindie Alonso-Sierra, a retired vocational rehabilitation counselor who has dedicated 20 years to community service and activism in Union City, focused heavily in education and youth empowerment.
  • Makhan Singh Bains, a major donor to Union City events and owner of , one of the largest Indo-American restaurant and catering companies in the Bay Area.
  • Marvin Bowerman, who has serves as counselor at the Fremont Family Resource Center, the Administrative Director of La Honda Music Camp, and a Cub Scout den leader.
  • Jim Soltau, a long-time youth minister at who has helped the church grow into one of the largest youth ministries in the East Bay.
  • Chris Valuckas, recreation supervisor for Union City Leisure Services and manager of the Kennedy Community Center, who has played an integral role in building Union City’s Special Needs Program.

Light refreshments will be served after the award ceremony.
