City Council to Recognize Dispatchers, Award Wheelchair Ramps Contract at Tuesday Meeting

The city will recognize National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and honor Lisa Miller as the 2010 Dispatcher of the Year for the Union City Police Department.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting, Union City Police Dispatcher Lisa Miller will be honored as the 2010 Dispatcher of the year.

Miller was selected by the Union City Police Officer’s Association. She has worked as a police dispatcher for more than 26 years, two and a half years in Union City.

This will be her third time receiving the award.

Her recognition comes during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, which occurs annually April 10 - April 16.

As part of its consent agenda, the council is also set to award a $215,000 contract to Oakland-based Rosas Brothers Construction to install 25 new wheelchair ramps across town this year and to upgrade about 100 more to meet ADA standards.

A list of ramp locations is included in the attached meeting agenda packet.

Joan Malloy, the city's economic and community development director, will then update the council on efforts by the Economic Development Advisory Team (EDAT) to come up with goals for future development in Union City.

EDAT is made up of city staff and business and community leaders and was formed in September, 2010.

An action plan stemming from an analysis of the city's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and potential threats (known as a SWOT analysis) will be ready by EDAT's April 27 meeting.

The report will identify areas to attract and retain business, marketing and outreach initiatives, improved data record keeping, and potential partnerships with outside organizations.

The council will also hear a report by Deputy City Manager Antonio Acosta on potential procedures it can implement to increase communication between the councilmembers and the city's commissions and boards, including recognition events and joint meetings.

The city council will meet at 7 p.m. in council chambers located at 34009 Alvarado Niles Road.
