BART Fares to Rise on New Year's Day

A round-trip ticket from Union City to Embarcadero will be around $11.20.

By Alex Gronke/Patch

The price of a BART ticket will jump 5.2 percent on Jan. 1. The average fare will rise by $0.19, according to the transit agency.

A round-trip ticket from Union City to Embarcadero will be around $11.20, according to BART's new fare chart.

The increase is the first in a series of scheduled fare hikes that are expected to raise $325 million over the next seven years. The revenue will be applied to new train cars, a new train control system and improvements to the Hayward maintenance yard in anticipation of BART service to San Jose.

The new rail connector from the Coliseum BART station to Oakland Airport is expected to open in the fall of 2014. The project, which broke ground in November 2010, cost $484 million. The driverless trains will deliver passengers from the BART platform to airport terminals in 15 minutes. While the fare has yet to be determined, BART officials have said the price of a ticket could be as much as $6.
