12-12-12: City to Perform Record Number of Civil Marriages

People are getting married at record numbers across the world, according to reports.

Tomorrow might be just another day for some but for the superstitious, 12-12-12 is a lucky, once-in-a-century occurrence that many are marking with weddings worldwide — and Union City is no exception.

According to Jill Stavosky, manager of Union City Leisure Services, there are five civil marriages scheduled for 12-12-12 at City Hall — the most in the city’s history.

“I’ve never done five in one day,” Stavosky said Monday, adding that more may be added before or on Wednesday. “Valentine’s Day is usually the day. This is just odd.”

“I guess people think it’s lucky. Or at least it’s easier to remember,” Stavosky added.

Unlike the past 11 years, 12-12-12 is the last triple date series of the century. And the numbers might have more significance than you think.

According to a CNN.com report, a 12 day is a balanced day for lovers. The Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel, which expects to marry more than 100 couples tomorrow, states on its website that the 1 is “go-getting” and the 2 is “sensitive.” Together, they make for a balanced relationship.

The number 12 is also considered a lucky “three” number by numerologists because the digits 1 and 2 add up to three, which corresponds with the planet Jupiter and is associated with wealth. It’s a good day to make a big purchase, make an investment or start a business venture, CNN reports.

For Union City couples who want to capitalize on the good luck, the City of Union City will be administering civil marriage ceremonies at City Hall by appointment from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Civil marriages are performed any day City Hall is open by appointment only.

Fees are $75. You must bring a marriage license issued by the county, along with picture IDs.

The city has performed civil marriages, which are administered by city staff, for the past five years and the fees benefit Union City Leisure Services’ scholarship program for local children who can’t afford summer camps.
