A vegetation fire on a grassy hill near Garin/Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Parks outside of Hayward may have been started by a juvenile in the area seen knocking signs down, fire officials said.
Alameda County fire crews were dispatched to the Hayward-Union City border near Tamarack Drive and Castro Street just before 3:10 p.m., Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
It burned about 6.4 acres and was contained at 3:43 p.m., Hayward fire spokesman Capt. Don Nichelson said.
The fire was potentially suspicious as a juvenile was spotted in the area shortly before it started knocking PG&E signs down, Nichelson said.
A neighbor heard noises outside and came out to see what was going on and saw the hillside on fire. While investigators would like to talk to the juvenile, it is unclear what exactly started the fire, he said.
Nichelson said that there has been several fires in the area over the last several years but that the hillside was kept relatively free from overgrowth so it wasn't difficult to contain.
But, he reminded residents, "even though it's getting into the fall season, fire conditions are still dangerous."
No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened by the blaze.
