A Union City man was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving after at a Fremont intersection Wednesday morning.
Fremont police say Joseph Ansari, 21, was in a fit of road rage and was speeding through the intersection of Fremont and Peralta boulevards in a 2000 Nissan Maxima at about 10:55 a.m. when he struck the woman and her daughter, who was in a stroller.
The woman, her daughter and her 3-year-old son, who was not injured, were standing on the northeast corner sidewalk while waiting to cross the street.
According to police, Ansari’s reckless driving began when he and another vehicle got into a bout of road rage near the intersection of Peralta Boulevard and Mowry Avenue. The two cars sped westbound on Peralta Boulevard.
While the other driver slowed down near Peralta Boulevard and Parish Avenue, Ansari kept driving at “a high rate of speed,” police said.
Ansari lost control of his car while trying to follow a curve in the road, according to Fremont police.
Ansari’s car hit the north curb, knocked over a signal light pole and struck the woman and her daughter. The 3-year-old boy escaped injury.
The victims were treated at a local trauma center. The injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Ansari suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
After considering physical evidence and witness statements, Fremont police arrested Ansari on suspicion of reckless driving causing bodily injury and booked him into Santa Rita Jail.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Fremont Police Traffic Unit at 510-790-6760.
