Update: Suspect Identified in Darlene Way Officer-Involved Shooting

Police arrested Lamar Lomack, 18, of Union City, who police say shot at them while they were investigating a residential burglary Thursday morning. Authorities also arrested Christopher Gaines, 19, at the scene on charges for an unrelated crime.

Police have released the name of a man they say during a home burglary investigation Thursday morning. The shooting turned into an intense 15-hour manhunt for the suspect and possible associates in a typically quiet neighborhood.

Lamar Wayne Lomack, 18, of Union City, was arrested just before 3:20 p.m. on July 21 on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a police officer, along with four counts of child endangerment. He is scheduled for arraignment at the Fremont Hall of Justice at 2 p.m., according to court records.

Court records also show that Lomack was previously arrested April 23 in Oakland on charges of reckless driving, driving while under the influence and driving without a license.

About two hours after Lomack was arrested Thursday, authorities also apprehended 19-year-old Christopher Michael Gaines, whose residence is unknown at the time, on suspicion of possession of stolen property. Though no formal charges have been filed against Gaines, an investigation for residential burglary will be presented in court Monday for review, police said.

The drama began at about 10:15 a.m., when officers responded to the area for a home burglary reported on Annette Court, police said. Residents of the burglarized house were upstairs when they heard a knock at the door and then the sound of glass breaking. When the residents came downstairs, they saw a male intruder who was startled and ran away, according to Lt. Ben Horner of the Union City Police Department.

As police investigated, they ended up at a nearby home on the 32400 block of Darlene Way and were "immediately shot upon" by a man identified as Lomack, according to police. The officers exchanged fire but neither the officers nor the suspect were struck, he said.

According to Lt. Kelly Musgrove of the UCPD, Lomack resides at the Darlene Way home.

Lomack managed to flee through the house and through back yards, Horner said.

Union City-Newark SWAT officers surrounded the home while additional SWAT units, along with officers from Hayward, Fremont, BART and the Alameda County Sheriffs Office, meticulously searched the neighborhood.

A woman who identified herself as Lomack’s aunt said that two newborn babies were taken from the home in car seats, as well as two older children, ages 8 and 12. Other adults may have been inside, she said.

Authorities locked down the neighborhood, establishing a wide perimeter around Jean, Rose and Darlene streets. .

SWAT officers eventually located Lomack hiding in a tool shed a few homes away from where the shooting occurred. He initially resisted arrest and was bitten by police dogs, according to Horner. He suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment before he was taken to Santa Rita Jail.

He initially was not believed to be the primary suspect. Lomack stands at five feet and five inches; the shooter was described as taller than six feet.

Authorities continued to surround the area and search homes. They found Gaines hiding nearby about two hours after arresting Lomack.

Ensuring the neighborhood was safe, police continued to surround Lomack’s Darlene Way home. They had reason to believe an additional suspect may have been inside, Horner said.

A little after 8 p.m., SWAT teams used tear gas to try and flush out any suspects and later conducted a tactical room-by-room search of the home before issuing an “all-clear” at about 1 a.m.

About two dozen Darlene Way residents were finally escorted to their homes.

Both Lomack and Gaines are scheduled to be arraigned at the Fremont Hall of Justice on Monday, July 25 at 2 p.m.
