A 73-year-old woman from Union City was struck by an SUV in Fremont Monday night. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

A 73-year-old Union City woman died after being struck by an SUV while walking in Fremont's Irivington district Monday night, according to media reports.

The Fremont Argus reports that the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Washington Boulevard near Olive Avenue.

The woman was transported by ambulance to Washington Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, Sgt. John Flynn of the Fremont Police Department told the Argus.

The victim's name was not released as relatives are still being notified.

According to witnesses, the woman was wearing dark clothes and suddenly stepped in the roadway in front of the SUV, which was headed westbound on Washington Avenue, the Argus reported.

The driver was a 22-year-old Fremont man. No charges are pending against him and alcohol or drugs were not involved in the accident, police told the newspaper.

Anyone with more information about the accident is asked to call the Fremont Police Traffic Office at 510-790-6760.

I have pity for the family of this woman but i need to say that Bay Area people seem as a pedestrian they THINK they ALWAYS have the right away and rudely and stupidly walk right in front of your car in parking lots and busy streets...

The woman was 73 years old. Is it really fair to assume that she "rudely and stupidly" walked into traffic? Perhaps she made an error in judgement or mistook the crosswalk signal. Perhaps she suffered from a physical or mental condition that we don't even know about yet. We can't all be as perfect as you Rick. This is a sad and tragic accident and my sympathies are with the woman's family.

Well ironically if there is a street corner, or cross walk where they are trying to cross.. they do in fact have the right of way. (if safe) BUT.. really 73 years old, randomly stepping out in front of moving traffic... a tragic accident yes, but dude, save the "people think they have the right of way" generality out of this poor womans sad and unfortunate death. You minimalize her life. thoughts to the families of this accident, either way this sucks flat out.
