Union City Gang Member Sentenced to Life in Prison for Shooting Fremont Cop

Andrew Barrientos, a 21-year-old Decoto gang member, nearly killed Fremont police officer Todd Young in Oakland last year. He was convicted last month for attempted murder of a peace officer, along with a laundry list of other criminal charges.

Bay City News Service

Oakland — A Union City gang member was sentenced today to life in state prison for a shooting in Oakland last year in which he fired 10 shots at Fremont police Officer Todd Young, nearly killing him.

, 21, was convicted of the attempted murder of a police officer and nine other felony counts for the incident at 2009 Auseon Ave., near Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland at about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2010.

Prosecutor John Brouhard told jurors in his that Barrientos knew exactly what he was doing when he shot Young because he was aware that there were two felony arrest warrants out for him when Young and fellow officer Eric Tang attempted to arrest him.

Brouhard said the two officers, who were part of the Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force, weren't wearing police uniforms but they had badges and yelled "Police!" when they tried to arrest Barrientos.

Brouhard said Barrientos also called his mother nine minutes after Young was shot to tell her he had messed up and told her, "I shot a police officer."

However, Barrientos' attorney, Barbara Thomas, .

But Brouhard said Barrientos was a member of the Decoto Nortenos gang and wanted to kill Young because he would earn respect as a cop-killer and rise "to the top of the all-star team of gang violence."

The prosecutor said Barrientos had told his ex-girlfriend a few months before the shooting that if police tried to arrest him "I'm ready for whatever" and that he would go "for all head shots" because he was armed with two pistols and had a vest.

The warrants for Barrientos were for recklessly avoiding police and speeding away from Union City police on April 7, 2010, and for threatening his ex-girlfriend with a gun in San Leandro on Aug. 13, 2010.

Brouhard said that in the latter incident, Barrientos pointed a pistol at his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of their baby boy, and said, "I'm going to kill you" when they had an argument after he reneged on his promise to her that he would turn himself in to police for the April 2010 incident.

Young was shot twice with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun in the pelvis and nearly died after he lost large amounts of blood. He spent more than seven weeks at Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he received blood transfusions and underwent numerous surgeries to address serious bladder problems.

Young testified against Barrientos last month and sat in the front row at today's hearing.

He said afterward that he will have abdomen reconstruction surgery next month and hopes to return to work next summer.

Oakland police said that after Young was shot, Barrientos tried to carjack a vehicle before successfully stealing a second car.

Barrientos fled to Southern California but was arrested near the Mexican border the day after the shooting.

In addition to the attempted murder of a peace officer charge, Barrientos was convicted of carjacking, attempted carjacking and two counts each of shooting at an occupied vehicle, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in a city.

He also was convicted of two enhancement clauses that he was acting to benefit a gang and was involved in street terrorism.

In addition, he was convicted of assault with a firearm and making terrorist threats for threatening his ex-girlfriend.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Horner sentenced Barrientos to life in prison with the possibility of parole for his conviction for the attempted murder of a peace officer, 25 years to life for using a firearm to shoot Young and another 36 years and 6 months for his other crimes.

Brouhard said Barrientos will have to serve at least 62 years in prison and won't be eligible for parole until he's 83 years old.

The word "Decoto" is tattooed on Barrientos' right arm and was visible throughout his preliminary hearing last year, when he was dressed in a sleeveless jail uniform. It was covered up during his trial because he was allowed to wear a suit.

Horner's courtroom was packed with officers from the Fremont and Union City police departments today. Several of Barrientos' family members, including his mother, also were present.

Barrientos' mother bowed her head and cried as Horner pronounced the lengthy sentence for him during today's 90-minute hearing.

It's really very, very sad when a young man destroys the entire rest of his life in such a manner. I'm glad he was sentenced appropriately, but I do feel sadness for his mother and other family members because they are all victims who are going to suffer too. I sincerely hope that all his friends will take serious note of what this young mans life is going to be like and make sure they don't make the same mistake. It's going to be 62 long hard years before this man stands any chance of walking out of that prison a free man again. While other young people are out enjoying pizza and beer, he will be locked behind bars.

Are You out of your frickin mind?
• Attempted murder of a police officer and nine other felony counts • Two felony arrest warrants out for him • Wanted to kill Young because he would earn respect as a cop-killer and rise "to the top of the all-star team of gang violence." • Told his ex-girlfriend a few months before the shooting that if police tried to arrest him "I'm ready for whatever" and that he would go "for all head shots" because he was armed with two pistols and had a vest. • Pointed a pistol at his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of their baby boy, and said, "I'm going to kill you" • Convicted of carjacking, attempted carjacking and two counts each of shooting at an occupied vehicle, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in a city. • Convicted of assault with a firearm and making terrorist threats for threatening his ex-girlfriend. Nice Guy? It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out what a worthless piece of crap this guy is. I hope he rots in prison. I’m sure he’ll make someone a nice little girlfriend.

Well said Zolla. @Decoto143 if you consider Andrew Barrientos a good/sweet person, I'm interested to whom you would consider to be a mean/bad person? Andrew's background was provided by those who knew him best: The girlfriend (mother of his child) that had a gun pointed at her by him, his mother and others friends/associates who testified about him. Imagine how much the police officers family missed him when he was in the hospital suffering from gun shot wounds that could have killed him? Andrew was going nowhere fast. He is finally in a place where he belongs. Unbelievable!

Look at your boy hijack this car at gunpoint from an innocent civilian.
http://www.policemag.com/videos/channel/gangs/2012/06/shots-fired-oakland-calif-carjacking.aspx If the boy pulled a gun on your mom or pops and jacked their ride, You might not consider him so sweet. I`m very liberal when it comes to non violent crimes. But when it comes to violent criminals, Who go around hijacking innocent hard working peoples cars at gunpoint, I`m grateful law enforcement are there to remove them from society. I know where you`re coming from. I have cousins in corcoran, And friends in Quentin. They`re not in there for some victimless crime. They harmed someone, Now they`re down. They might have good hearts, But it doesn't change the fact, They deserve to be down.

@babeycakez I'm interested to whom you would consider to be a mean/bad person? What constitutes bad in your opinion, bad enough to be sentenced to prison for decades? The cop that was shot by Andrew, was he bad? The people who were carjacked by Andrew are they bad? The mother of his child who he beat up and pulled a loaded gun on, is she bad? You keep bringing up God and only he can judge, how would he judge Andrew's actions? As Jake has so thoughtfully pointed out: "They`re not in there for some victimless crime." So based upon your demented thought process, we should let gangbangers run loose throughout our cities until they die or killed off and let God decide if they are good or bad. Next time one of your "good hearted" friends commits a crime, and is about to be sentenced, you should try that "God sayes not to judge" line and see how that works out.

Looks like Decoto143 and babeycakez are the same person, too funny. Once you begin to read the illiterate writing styles it becomes evident. Rather than writing in defense of this loser, because that is what he is, you should go back to school. Learn how to write, and speak properly, unless working at some dead-end job is your career choice... Better get used to saying: Would you like fries with that? You think that bringing up God makes you sound like a good person, if anything it's an insult. I wonder what God thinks of gangs? Of people who beat up women, like Andrew did? Who would God judge to be a better person, Officer Young who put his life on the line, upholds the law, and protects the citizens or Andrew who was a known violent gangbanger causing terror, and mayhem disrespecting his mother, the law and society? Hopefully, the mother of his child will find a more suitable father figure, because Andrew won't be coming home anytime soon, thank God for that.

And if it was the officer who shot him, he probably would've got a year including time served. He ain't no hero just wrong place wrong time.... & Naa he probably wasn't a bad person just some wrong decisions. you don't think the law causes terror? you know who i consider bad people? most of the system & judgmental people like you, you didn't know Andrew & neither did i. so who are you to judge a man you've never said one word to in your life.
annonymus December 12, 2012 at 02:02 am
you only know what the media lets you. in this case, there's 4 sides of the story.

@annonymus
read Jake Diaz's post. This is the problem, making criminals the victim, and refusing to accept the viewpoint of society. I was not on the jury, and I am not a judge, but I respect the decision of 12 law abiding citizens who were, than the opinion someone like you. Since you seem to be so informed, please share with us your 4 sided view. I hope they begin to stop, and frisk in every city.
