Qiu’s Toxicology Results Return Unclear

Toxicology reports came back inconclusive for deceased Albany High School senior Cathy Qiu.

While trace amounts of alcohol were found in Albany High School student Cathy Qiu, decomposition of her body and the natural rise of postmortem alcohol levels made it impossible to determine whether Qiu was under the influence at the time of her death, San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault said Monday.

Qiu was found dead, washed onto a remote beach in unincorporated San Mateo County on Oct. 21. Qiu’s family, who lived in Richmond, reported the 16-year-old missing nearly a month prior.

Richmond police were handling the missing person investigation – treating it as a probable runaway juvenile case – until Qiu was found dead in San Mateo, when the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office began Qiu’s death investigation.

The cause of Qiu’s death is still unknown and pending a final report by the coroner’s office, Foucrault said. Early on in the investigation, authorities did not suspect any foul play.

Qiu was an exemplary student and avid tennis player.

So what is the connection between her and the teacher if any? I find it very odd she goes missing the day after the teacher is arrested. They both take their lives. We don't have the date she did but, could it been the same day Izumizaki did or right after she found out he was dead? Is this the young girl that was seen with Izumizaki at the party's? To many unanswered questions & for me there seems to be a connection.

Zero connection between the two deaths other than perhaps ancestral genetics. You're right about 'too many unansewered questions; however. Since she was an avid swimmer, she DID NOT find herself in the water fully clothed through any fault of her own UNLESS there was a Large Reddish Bridge involved, IMHO.( She was an accomplished swimmer.) So, ... the 'Bridge' scenario would indicate acute depression. While her school performance, and sports activity indicates a well performing/adjusted teen, the fact that she was/is a transfer student in the Albany disctrict would contribute to a 'not belonging'-cloud which can be a source of acute depression for teens. But yeah; somebody knows.

Is there any official report of her taking her own life? Perhaps she was walking along the beach with her feet in the water and got caught off guard by a large wave. Add in a rip tide and even the best swimmers can drown.

James, a report on the cause of death has not been released. I will publish a story when it has been made public.
