Police Log: Woman Assaulted in Home Burglary, Six Arrested After Call from 8-Year-Old

Juvenile caught with handgun

On Saturday night, a patrol officer in the area of Smith and Fredi streets saw a juvenile acting suspicious. According to the report, he was attempting to duck and hide from the officer, so the officer stopped to investigate. The officer contacted the juvenile and, during a pat search, recovered a loaded handgun in the juvenile’s front pants pocket. The juvenile was arrested on suspicion of carrying a loaded firearm.

Gold chain snatchings

Officers responded to Kennedy Park on Decoto Road to investigate a strong-arm robbery. The victim was walking through the park when two individuals ran up to her and tore a gold necklace off of her neck.  The suspects then fled in a waiting get-away car.

Shortly after on Sunday, another victim reported being robbed in a similar manner. According to the report, two suspects pushed the victim to the ground and took a gold necklace from around his neck. The suspects fled in a nearby vehicle. Because of their similarities, police believe the robberies were related.

Sept. 26

Pit bulls kill small dog, injure owner

On Monday morning, Union City Public Works employees in the area of 10th and H streets witnessed two large dogs—a pit bull and a pit bull/Rottweiler mix—attack a small dog that was being walked on a leash by its owner. The two workers helped the young woman walking her dog. According to the report, they used a shovel to stop the attack and protect themselves.  They managed to put one of the dogs in the back of their vehicle and corner the other in a back yard before police arrived. The dogs were taken by an Animal Control Officer to the Tri-City Animal Shelter. The small dog was killed as a result of the injuries sustained from larger, more aggressive dogs. The owner sustained minor hand injury during the attack.

Woman assaulted during home burglary

A woman was beaten and her car stolen during a home burglary Monday. According to the report, the victim was confronted by a burglar as she entered her home. The burglar forced her to an upstairs room where he battered her. He then fled in the victim’s vehicle, which was later recovered in Oakland. The investigation is ongoing.

Bad U-turn causes major injury accident

Later in the day, officers responded to a major injury accident on H Street near Colgate Street. A vehicle traveling on H Street was broadsided by a vehicle making an unsafe U-turn. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

8-year-old reports home burglary, leads to arrest of six

On Monday night, officers responded to a home burglary on Hollyhock Street. The reporting party was an 8-year-old who provided a description of the suspects and vehicle. Minutes later, an officer spotted and stopped the  vehicle as it fled the scene. Six individuals were detained and numerous items of stolen property were recovered in the vehicle, the report said. The suspects, two of whom were adults and four who were juveniles, were arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Sept. 27

Another gold chain snatching

Officers responded to the area of Mission Boulevard and Whipple Road to investigate another strong-arm robbery. The victim told officers that she was walking southbound on Mission Boulevard as the suspect was walking northbound. As they approached each other, the suspect suddenly grabbed the victim’s gold chain and tore it off her neck and ran away.

Two Monday night burglary suspects arrested again

Later in the day, neighbors reported an in-progress burglary at a residence on the 31000 block of San Andreas Drive. Arriving officers saw two individuals matching the description given by the neighbors and detained them. The officer recognized the suspects as two of the six subjects arrested the day before for burglary. Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that the two subjects were, in fact, the responsible suspects and arrested for burglary again.

Drunk driver injures herself in accident

On Tuesday night, officers responded to a solo vehicle accident on Alvarado-Niles Road at Interstate 880. Arriving officers found the driver was intoxicated and arrested her on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Due to injuries she suffered during the accident, the driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
