Police Log: Stabbing, Armed Robberies, Special Olympics Torch Run

Two people suffered non-threatening injuries during an altercation, a supermarket and a warehouse were robbed, and police participated in a fundraiser.

Thursday, June 16

Home burglary suspect arrested

Officers investigated an in-progress residential burglary on Eighth Street. The resident reported  to officers that two suspects fled out the rear sliding door as she entered her home. Responding officers cleared the residence of any additional suspects, while others conducted an area search. An officer spotted a subject running in the area of H Street near Fifth Street and stopped him to investigate. According to the report, the suspect was positively identified and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Armed robbery at Food Maxx

Officers responded to the Food Maxx store on Industrial Parkway to investigate a just-occurred armed robbery. Two people entered the store about 4 a.m. and acted as if they were about to purchase a bag of chips. Once at the checkout stand, one suspect pointed a handgun at the clerk while the other demanded money from the cash register, police said. The cashier complied and the suspects then fled the store. Saturday, June 18

Clothing warehouse robbery

An armed robbery occurred at clothing warehouse Amtrat International (34015 Seventh St.). When officers arrived, employees told them that two men wearing ski masks and dark clothing entered the business and demanded money, according to the report.  There was an approximate 10-minute delay between the time of the call and when the suspects fled, the report said. 

Sunday, June 19

Stabbing on Appian Way

An officer on routine patrol saw a disturbance in the area of Appian Way near Mission Boulevard. As the officer approached to investigate, he saw one of the subjects was covered in blood, from what was later found to be a stab wound. Additional officers responded and eventually detained all of the involved parties. Two of the subjects were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. According to the report, none of the involved parties were cooperative and officers were unable to determine who the primary aggressor was.

Child taken into protective custody

On Sunday evening, officers responded to the area of Contempo Park near Meteor Drive on a report of a lost 5-year-old child. The child was seen running barefoot in and around the park. An officer located the child in the area of Santa Susanna and Dyer Street. During the course of the officer’s investigation, he suspected the child may be the victim of child abuse and took him into protective custody pending additional investigation, according to the report. The case is actively being investigated by the investigations unit and Child Protective Services.

Monday, June 20

UCPD participate in Special Olympic Torch Run

Members of the Union City Police Department and their families participated in the Special Olympic Torch Run through Union City. Union City Police Officers' Association President Mike Ward received the Special Olympics Torch from members of the Fremont and Newark Police Departments at Decoto Road near Paseo Padre Parkway. He, along with the runners, bicyclist and support staff, traveled approximately five miles through Union City before handing the torch off to members of the Hayward Police Department at the Union City-Hayward border on Industrial Parkway.

The Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run is both a fundraiser and public awareness campaign, raising funds to benefit Special Olympics.
