Police Log: Street Robberies, Home Invasion, Teenager Followed, Hydrant Floods Street

Two women were robbed of their purses, cell phones and other belongings, while a teenager was followed by a man in his car. Two homes were burglarized and police also arrested a man who said he had a bomb and resisted police.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated June 9, the log contains incidents that occurred June 2-7. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, June 2

Woman with baseball bat arrested

Officers responded to a call of a woman jumping into the back yard of a residence on San Andreas Drive armed with a baseball bat. According to police, officers located the woman in the area of San Andreas Drive and Santa Susana Way. The woman was talking incoherently and officers arrested her on suspicion of being under the influence of methamphetamine, police said.

Attempted robbery on H Street

On Thursday night a female was walking on H Street near Eighth Street when she was confronted by a male who attempted to forcibly take her purse. According to the police report, the man grabbed the victim by the waist as he attempted to rip the victim's purse from her grasp. The victim fought him off and ran away, police said. The victim was uninjured in the incident, the report said.

Friday, June 3

Home invasion on Harbor Cove Way

Officers responded to a call of a residential burglary in progress on Harbor Cove Way. The 911 dispatcher told officers that a juvenile male had locked himself in an upstairs closet because someone had broken into his residence downstairs, according to the police report. The victim's grandmother then arrived home and entered the residence. Four suspects ran past her and fled in a nearby parked vehicle, police said. No one was injured. 

Saturday, June 4

Woman robbed while waiting for bus

A woman holding her cell phone was standing at the Union Landing Transit Center awaiting a bus when three people approach her. Police said two of them waited nearby, while a third walked up to her and, without a word, grabbed the cell phone. The  woman tried unsuccessfully to hold onto her phone, the report said. All three suspects ran across Alvarado-Niles Road into the Casa Verde neighborhood, she told police.

Woman attacked, robbed near BART

On Saturday night a woman was walking near of 24 Union Square across from the Union City BART Station. Three people walked up behind her, and one of them covered the woman's eyes with his hands, according to the police report. The victim was punched in the face by one suspect while his accomplices stole her purse, laptop bag and the cell phone she was holding in her hand, the report said. Police said the suspects then ran off across the street and through the BART parking lot. The victim sustained minor injuries.

Sunday, June 5

Man arrested after Rite Aid disturbance

Officers were sent to investigate a disturbance at . According to the police report, the store manager told officers that he had confronted a suspect in the employee break room. The man stated he had a bomb and was going to blow up the store, but then fled, the report said. Based on the description, officers were able to track the suspect to his residence on Santa Inez Court, police said. Officers contacted the suspect, who took a fighting stance and stated he had a gun, according to the report. The suspect then ran away and began jumping neighboring fences. Police officers established a perimeter, searched and found the suspect hiding in a neighbor's garage, police said. According to the report, after a short struggle, the suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of making criminal threats, threatening an officer and resisting arrest. Due to a pre-existing medical condition, he was transported to a local hospital for treatment prior to being booked at county jail, the report said.

Parolee arrested for drug possession

Later on Sunday, an officer on routine patrol in the area of Remington Drive saw a known parolee engaged in a "hand-to-hand" drug transaction, according to the police report. The officer contacted the two subjects to investigate. One parolee was arrested on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, the report said. According to police, the parolee lived nearby, so the officer conducted a parole search of his residence. The officer did not locate any additional evidence associated with the suspect already arrested, but did locate additional methamphetamine in the residence; another person living at the residence admitted it belonging to him, according to the police report. This person was also arrested on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine, police said.

Monday, June 6

Girl followed while walking home

Officers investigated a report of a man following a 14-year-old girl. According to the police report. Officers learned that the victim was walking home near Fredi Street and Queensboro Way when an adult male in a vehicle began to follow her slowly and attempt to talk to her, police said. According to the report, the teenager became frightened when the man pulled his vehicle ahead of her location and stopped, apparently waiting for her to approach him. The teenager asked a woman who was nearby for help, the report said. The woman attempted to contact the man in his vehicle, but he fled the area when he saw her approaching him, police said.

City employee helps uncover stolen property

A Union City Public Works employee called 911 to report a possible  burglary at a residence on New Harbor Way, according to the police report. The employee reported seeing two people fleeing the residence with backpacks and leaving in a vehicle, police said. The report said the employee obtained a license plate, which officers tracked to a residence in San Jose. Members of the Union City Police Investigations, Community Policing and Problem Solving units assisted San Jose patrol officers in securing the residence in San Jose and serving a search warrant, police said. According to the report, stolen property was recovered and officers are continuing to investigate the case.

Tuesday, June 7

Crash breaks fire hydrant, street floods

On Tuesday evening officers responded to a roll-over traffic accident on San Andreas Drive near Santa Paula Way. Arriving officers found the vehicle lying on its roof and its occupants gone, police said. A fire hydrant had been sheared off  when the vehicle hit it, causing water to flood the street, according to the report. The Alameda County Fire Department responded and shut off the water main. Police said they learned that there were two occupants in the vehicle prior to the accident. An investigation is continuing.

Man arrested for driving while intoxicated

Also on Tuesday night, an officer was responding to the area of Mission Boulevard and Appian Way to investigate a report of a group of people involved in a fight. As an officer arrived in the area, he saw a vehicle fleeing the area being driven in an erratic manner, the report said, so the officer made an enforcement stop. The  driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI).
