Police Log: Pill Bust, Counterfeiter Arrest, Multiple Domestic Battery Reports

A Vicodin deal gone awry, a U.S. currency counterfeiter arrested and several domestic disputes appear in this week's crime log.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated April 28 and received May 2, the log contains incidents that occurred from April 22-27. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Friday, April 22

A man wanted for a domestic violence warrant was bitten by a police dog and arrested after being recognized by an off-duty cop. The officer, who was driving to work, spotted the suspect and alerted on-duty police, who responded to the girlfriend’s residence nearby on Union Square Drive. Officers surrounded the residence and called for the man to surrender. The suspect agreed to come out, but changed his mind and tried to run back inside, officers said. Because of his criminal history, which includes violence and weapons charges, according to the Union City Police Department report, police released a K-9 dog, who bit the suspect on his leg, causing a minor injury. The man was treated at a local hospital and taken to Santa Rita Jail for booking.

Saturday, April 23

A Union City man was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery and false imprisonment after driving around Union City and into Newark while assaulting a victim in his car, police said. An officer, who responded to a Chevron gas station in Newark where the victim called for help, learned that the victim and the man were engaged in a heated argument earlier in the day. Police described the incident this way: "The suspect drove the victim through Union City and while driving on Railroad Avenue, started to punch and pull the victim’s hair. The victim begged to be dropped off but the suspect continued to assault her as he drove into Newark. The victim managed to escape when the suspect drove into the Chevron on Newark Boulevard and Jarvis Avenue in Newark. The victim ran inside the gas station and asked an attendant for help."

The man left before police arrived. Officers contacted him on his cell phone and he agreed to return to his home in Union City, where he was arrested.

Later in the evening, officers responded to an apartment on Union Square to investigate another report of a domestic dispute report. As officers walked into the hallway, they saw a group of females and one male. The male suspect fled when he saw officers and launched himself off the fourth floor railing, landing in the vegetation below, police said. He ran in an unknown direction. Officers said they learned that the suspect had assaulted his girlfriend. A report was sent to the District Attorney’s office for review of a domestic battery charge.

Sunday, April 24

Seventy Vicodin pills were retrieved after officers investigated two people in in a parking lot at Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The officers were checking the strip mall in response to complaints when they saw the suspects. Officers stopped one of the suspects and found two Vicodin pills in his possession, according to the police report. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled susbstance. The other suspect, was found in possession of 68 Vicodin pills, police said, and was arrested on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale.

Monday, April 25

A juvenile was arrested while trying to burglarize a residence on Del Monte Court, Union City police said. A witness told police he saw the juvenile trying to break into the residence through a rear sliding door. The witness took a photo of the juvenile, who was apparently alerted by the camera flash and ran. Police arrived just in time to catch the suspect less than a block away, according to the police report.

Tuesday, April 26

Community Policing and Problem Solving Unit (COPPS) officers and the Major Crimes Task Force officers were conducting special enforcement in the area of Mission Boulevard and Tamarack Drive when they recognized a person on searchable probation. The officers stopped the person and searched his car. Officers said they found counterfeit U.S. currency in the car and arrested the man on suspicion of several federal offenses.

Members of the COPPS unit were also in the area of the Tropics Mobile Home Park conducting special enforcement when they stopped a car in which everyone was on searchable probation. One suspect was found in possession of methamphetamine, police said, and was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale. Another was arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Later that night, an officer was sent to investigate an in-progress vandalism.  A witness reported that three suspects were spray-painting graffiti on the sound wall on Whipple Road near Dyer Street. The officer caught all three suspects in the act and arrested them, according to the police report.

Wednesday, April 27

Newark police asked for assistance in covering service calls while they investigated a homicide in which a 25-year-old woman was found dead of apparent stab wounds. A suspect, Jason Otis Monroe, was arrested after being found with a bloodied knife an clothing. Read the full story on Newark Patch .

Also on Wednesday, COPPS police in the area of the Tropics Mobile Home Park witnessed a vehicle committing a traffic violation. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled and tried to evade the officer, police said. The driver eventually pulled over near Medallion Drive and Noah Drive. The driver, however, jumped out of the car and made threatening statements to the officer, taking a fighting stance, police said. Officers had to physically restrain the man in handcuffs while others investigated why he attempted to flee, according t the police report. Officers learned that the driver was on parole and had discarded a loaded firearm nearby, which was recovered, police said. The driver was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and a violation of parole.
