Police Log: Parading Pot Plants Lead to Arrests; Purse Snatching

A summary of crimes and incidents reported in Union City.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between Sept. 13 and 18 as released by the Union City Police Department. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.   

Friday, Sept. 13

  • Purse Snatching. An elderly woman’s purse was snatched from her as she walked on Decoto Road near Alvarado-Niles Road at 10:45 a.m. The suspect pulled her purse from her, causing the woman to fall to the ground. The suspect was described as a black male, about 30 years old, standing at about 6-foot-2 and weighing 200 pounds. He was last seen running northbound on Decoto Road.

  • Parading pot plants lead to arrests. A witness flagged down a police officer and alerted him to suspects carrying marijuana plants in the area of Dyer Street at 11:22 p.m. The officer detained a group of subjects in the area. A search of their car yielded a .38 caliber revolver, marijuana and methamphetamine. Multiple suspects were arrested as a result.

Tuesday, Sept. 17

  • Jaywalker gets arrested. An officer stopped a jaywalker on Alvarado-Niles Road near Worlds Liquors at the Safeway Shopping Center. As the officer was about to write the subject a citation, the subject decided to make a run for it. The suspect was captured after a short chase with the help of citizens.

Wednesday, Sept. 18

  • Suspicious person arrested. Officers were sent to Dutra Vernaci Lane to investigate a suspicious person jumping over a fence at around 5:50 p.m. Officers contacted a 24-year-old male suspect, who was identified by a resident as the person seen entering and exiting the resident’s backyard. He was subsequently arrested.
