Police Log: Obama Documentary Sparks Fight in Century 25 Restroom; Teen Beaten Unconscious for a Scooter

Reports also include an armed robbery at an Indian grocery store and an attempted armed robbery at Mariner Park.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note that occurred Aug. 23 to 30. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, Aug. 23

Weed dealer busted twice in two weeks

At 11:54 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street saw a vehicle with a mechanical violation and made a vehicle enforcement stop. The officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from within the car and recognized the driver as a suspect he arrested the previous week for selling marijuana. The officer searched the driver and vehicle and found a large amount of cash and more than 32 ounces of weed packaged for sale. The driver was arrested on suspicion of marijuana for sale and transportation of marijuana for sale.

Westgard Street home burglarized

A residence on the 900 block of Westgard Street was burglarized between 8:30 a.m. and 6:10 p.m. The suspect(s) made entry through a side window.

Suspect arrested for being drunk in public, threatening a police officer

At about 7:50 p.m., officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on the 4100 block of Aquarius Circle. Arriving officers found an intoxicated subject in front of the home. Officers learned that the intoxicated subject had battered a relative and made criminal threats to hurt the person. The subject also threatened to attack the officers. The subject was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, criminal threats, and threatening an officer.

Friday, Aug. 24

Drunk driver arrested after speeding through stop signs

Just before midnight, an officer on routine patrol in the area of Whipple Road and E Street saw a vehicle speed through stop signs. The officer made an enforcement stop and contacted the driver, who was found to be intoxicated. The officer arrested the driver on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol after the driver failed a series of field sobriety tests.

Saturday, Aug. 25

Craigslist scammer tries to rob victims at gunpoint at Mariner Park

At about 9:40 p.m., two people were victims of an attempted robbery at , located between Remora Drive and Shorebird Drive. The victims arrived at the park to meet a man who posted a Craigslist advertisement about a vehicle for sale. Almost immediately upon arrival, the man put a mask on and displayed a black semi-automatic handgun. He pointed the gun at the victims and demanded money but the victims fled on foot.

The suspect was described as a white male adult, between 20-25 years old, 5’10”-6’ tall, between 150 – 180 pounds, thin build, last seen wearing a black hoody and black pants.

Obama documentary sparks fight in Century 25 restroom

An elderly man was attacked inside of a restroom after another theatergoer started an argument about documentary film “2016: Obama’s America.”

Officers were called to the theater at about 9:45 p.m. where they were greeted in the lobby by the elderly victim and a man who helped him. The suspect was located around the corner from the lobby inside of the theater, where officers found him bleeding from his face and arguing with security guards. Officers physically restrained him in order to communicate and get him medical aid.

Through their investigation, officers learned that the victim and the suspect were in the men’s restroom when the suspect became boisterous and used racial slurs while talking about the film. The elderly victim told the man to keep his comments to himself, who then became aggressive and pushed the elderly victim. Another man in the restroom saw the victim being pushed and intervened. The man punched the suspect in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. The witness and the victim then notified security, who called police.

Neither the victim nor the witness wanted to press charges against the suspect, who was taken to a local hospital to treat minor injuries.

Reckless drunk driver arrested at Union Landing

Officers on routine patrol in the Union Landing Shopping Center observed a vehicle being driven in a reckless manner and made an enforcement stop. The driver was eventually arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol after failing to pass a series of field sobriety tests.

Drunk driver crashes into four parked cars

Later this same night, officers responded to the area of Meteor Drive near Solar Circle to investigate a vehicle that had collided into four parked cars. Arriving officers found that the driver was intoxicated and arrested her on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Sunday, Aug. 26

Drunk driver injured after hitting two parked cars

Officers responded to the area of Skylark Avenue and Mann Avenue to investigate a vehicle colliding into two parked vehicles. Arriving officers found that the driver was intoxicated and arrested her on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

Monday, Aug. 28

Armed robbery at Shalimar grocery store

At about 8:25 p.m., officers responded to the Indian grocery store located at 32118 Alvarado Blvd. to investigate a just-occurred robbery involving a firearm. Arriving officers searched the area for the suspect but could not locate him. The female clerk advised officers that a lone black male adult in his mid-20s wearing a black hoodie entered the store and pointed a handgun at her as he demanded the money from the cash register. The clerk complied and the suspect fled the area on foot.

S K Donuts, liquor store burglarized

Additionally, about 10:20 p.m., an unknown male suspect smashed the windows to the and a liquor store located in the strip mall on the corner of Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The suspect burglarized both businesses and fled on foot. The suspect’s actions were caught on video surveillance.

Tuesday, Aug. 29

Man arrested with loaded firearm

At about 5 p.m., members of the Community Policing Unit were conducting special enforcement in the area of Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The officers were investigating a possible stolen vehicle being driven near the Starbucks’s store and ordered the driver out of the vehicle. The officers found that the vehicle was not stolen, but that the driver had a loaded, concealed firearm in his vehicle, which had a loaded high capacity magazine. The driver was arrested on suspicion of firearms charges.

Wednesday, Aug. 30

Teen beaten unconscious for scooter, cell phone

At about 3:45 p.m., a 17-year-old victim agreed to meet an acquaintance at Contempo Park located on Meteor Drive near Agena Circle in order to sell his scooter. The acquaintance and three others attacked the victim, rendering him unconscious, and took his scooter, cell phone and backpack. This case is still under investigation.
