Police Log: Masked Gunmen Rob Couple; Auto Burglaries at Union Landing

A roundup of recent police reported by the Union City Police Department.

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between Nov. 6 and 10 as released by the Union City Police Department. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.  

Wednesday, Nov. 6

  • Auto burglaries at Union Landing. Officers investigated two auto burglaries at Union Landing at 3 p.m. One of the burglaries occurred in the parking lot near Starbucks, the other near Texas Roadhouse.

  • Bogus murder-suicide threat. Officers were notified by San Leandro PD at 10:44 a.m. of a possible suicidal person headed to Union City. Authorities received information that the male subject threatened to shoot his girlfriend then himself. Police learned the man was attempting to pick up his child at a daycare in Union City. Officers responded to the daycare and contacted the subject. In the end, the investigation revealed that the threats were unfounded.
  • Car thief arrested. Officers responded to the area of Arizona Street and Copa Del Oro around 11:45 a.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle. Officers found the vehicle and learned it was stolen. They also learned that the driver of the vehicle was walking in the neighborhood. The suspect was located and arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft.

Friday, Nov. 8

  • Got a loaded gun in your car? Don’t use your cell phone while driving. Officers stopped a driver for using his cell phone while driving at about 8:30 p.m. Three of the passengers were convicted felons with probation search conditions. Officers located a loaded .40 Cal semi-auto handgun under the seat. The gun was unregistered and none of the passengers claimed ownership of it, so they were all arrested and booked.
  • Masked gunmen rob couple near Tidewater Drive. Officers responded to a just-occurred robbery in the small park adjacent to Tidewater Drive at about 8:55 p.m. Two victims were relaxing in the park gazebo when they were approached by two suspects wearing ski masks and black clothing. The suspects were armed with handguns and demanded the victims’ property. The suspects took the victim’s wallets and cell phones before fleeing the area in a rod 90s Honda Civic hatchback.

Saturday, Nov. 9

  • Drunk woman arrested. Officers responded to Starling Drive at around 4:50 p.m. on a report of a drunk and violent female. The woman was located in an alley and refused to cooperate with officers. She had to be physically restrained and was taken into custody and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric detention because of her bizarre behavior.

Sunday, Nov. 10

  • He just wanted to take a shower. Officers responded to a home on Corto Monterey at about 8:40 a.m. on a report of an in-progress burglary. Neighbors reported a male suspect climbing the fence of the home. Arriving officers found the suspect on the roof of the house and detained him. The suspect told police that he was trying to get inside of his sister’s house to take a shower. However, it was determined that the suspect didn’t have permission to enter the home and was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, along with a parole violation.
