Police Log: Man Assaults His 84-Year-Old Mother, Steals Her Car; Gold Chain Snatchings

Reports also include multiple drunk driving collisions and home burglaries.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note that occurred Oct. 11 - 17. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, Oct. 11

Drunk driver crashes into parked cars on Zinnia Court

At about 6:20 a.m., officers responded to the area of Zinnia Court to investigate a vehicle collision into two parked vehicles. The investigating officer determined the driver was intoxicated and arrested her on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Suspicion person arrested with Vicodin, Xanax pills

Later at about 10 a.m., a security guard at Chili’s at Union Landing reported a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot. An officer contacted the subject and found him to be in possession of multiple Vicodin and Xanax pills without a prescription. The subject was arrested and transported to jail.

Car thief arrested after leading cops on chase

This same afternoon, officers saw a vehicle run a red light at the intersection of Decoto Road and Clover Street. The officers made an enforcement stop but the driver sped off. The officers began to pursue the suspect and found that he hit a curb while turning onto Ozark River Way. The driver abandoned the vehicle, which turned out to be stolen. The officer apprehended him shortly after when he was spotted running down the street.

Friday, Oct. 12

Suspect flees vehicle after police stop, leaves loaded handgun inside

At 12:30 a.m., an officer on routine patrol conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The driver fled on foot and was not located. A search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a stolen loaded handgun. The officer was able to identify the driver and sent the report to the District Attorney’s office for review.

Man arrested for battery after assaulting ex-girlfriend

At about 9:10 p.m., officers were sent to investigate a report of a man assaulting a female in the area of the 4100 block of Fair Ranch Road. Arriving officers found the victim’s unattended car in neutral with its headlights and wipers on. A witness advised that a male forced a woman into a car along with two children. Through the course of the officer’s investigation, he tracked the subjects to a residence on Saturn Way. Officers contacted all the involved parties and determined that the male half had taken his former girlfriend against her will, committed battery and violated a restraining order. The suspect was arrested and transported to jail.

Taco Bell shooting suspect arrested

Later this night at about 10:40 p.m., Union City Detectives were following up on leads regarding the shooting that occurred on Oct. 6 at the Taco Bell parking lot on Alvarado Boulevard. The detectives spotted the suspect and had patrol officers make a high risk stop near Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Saturday, Oct. 13

Woman assaulted in strong-arm robbery

At about 9:30 a.m., officers were sent to the area of Solar Circle and Meteor Way to investigate a report of two black females chasing another female. Arriving officers found the victim of a strong-armed robbery who was suffering from abrasions. The two suspects took the victim’s purse, money and cell phone during the attack. This case is still under investigation.

Sunday, Oct. 14

Drunk driver’s vehicle rolls over; another drunk driver almost crashes into officer at scene

At about 12:25 a.m., officers responded to a roll over vehicle collision in the area of Union City Boulevard and Kohoutek Way. The driver couldn’t make the right turn and hit the curb, causing the vehicle to roll over. The driver was determined to be intoxicated and was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The passenger was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

While officers were still investigating the incident, a drunk driver attempted to drive through the blocked lanes and almost hit an officer as she drove around his patrol car. She was detained and eventually arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Tuesday, Oct. 16

Attempted burglary on Crest Lane

Between 9 and 9:25 a.m., a white male adult and a black male adult in their 30s kicked the front door open to a residence on the 32000 block of Crest Lane. The resident was home at the time and confronted the suspects. The suspects ran out of the front door and out of sight. An area search for the suspects met with negative results.

Man batters his 84-year-old mother, steals her car

At 11 a.m. officers responded to a home on the 2500 block of McArthur Avenue to investigate a domestic disturbance. Arriving officers located an 84-year-old victim and learned that her 41-year-old son stole her vehicle. The son also committed a battery, which injured the victim’s arm. The suspect is on parole and required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet. Officers tracked the subject to San Leandro and arrested him on suspicion of auto theft, elder abuse and a parole violation.

Woman robbed of gold necklace while walking on Dyer Street

At 1:15 p.m., officers were sent to the area of Dyer Street and Deborah Drive to investigate a strong-arm robbery. The victim told officers that she and her sister were crossing Dyer Street when a suspect walked up to them and ripped a gold necklace from her neck. Officers searched the area but were unsuccessful.

The suspect was described as a black male teenager between 15 and 17 years old, about 5-foot-7 with a thin build, short afro and no facial hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and last seen running south on Deborah Drive.

Wednesday, Oct. 17

Homes burglarized on Heritage Court, Watkins Street

Between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. a home on the 33000 block of Heritage was burglarized. The suspect(s) made entry through a rear bedroom window.

Additionally, between noon and 12:05 p.m., a residence on the 31000 block of Watkins Street was burglarized. The suspect(s) made entry to the residence by prying the front door.

Another gold chain snatching on Dyer Street

At 4:35 p.m., officers responded to the area of Dyer Street near Regents Boulevard to investigate a just occurred strong-arm robbery. The victim was walking her dog when a subject came up to her and pushed her to the ground as he tore off a gold necklace she wore around her neck.

The victim described the subject as a clean-shaven black male adult about, about 18 years old. The suspect got into a silver vehicle with two other men.
