Police Log: Laptop Stolen at Gunpoint in Chevy’s Parking Lot; Man Tries to Rob Victims With Baseball Bat

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Union City between Jan. 31 and Feb. 5 as released by the Union City Police Department. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style. 

THURSDAY, JAN. 31

Man tries to rob victims with baseball bat

A disappointed robber came up empty after approaching two victims with a baseball bat. The suspect approached the victims at about 10 p.m. as they walked to the Bank of America on Alvarado Boulevard and demanded money. One of the victims ran away and the other showed the suspect that she didn’t have any money or valuables on her. The victim said the suspect appeared disappointed and fled the area in a late model silver four-door Toyota Camry. The suspect was described as a black male about 34 to 36 years old with a shaved head, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds. The victim was not harmed.

Man attempts to kick officers, threatens to kill them

Officers responded to the ExtendedStay America at Union Landing at around 6:11 p.m. on a report of a large crowd of family members causing a disturbance. The same family had created a disturbance at around 7:45 p.m. at the AT&T store. When asked for ID, one of the men in the group because aggressive. It turned out that the man had two warrants out for his arrest. The man pulled away from officers and attempted to kick them while being arrested. The man threatened to kill the officers and their family members.

SATURDAY, FEB. 2

Father and son arrested during DUI pickup

An officer followed a speeding car to a home on 4th Street. The driver was determined to be driving while under the influence. As the officer was making the arrest, the suspect’s father came out of the house and started pushing the officer. Both the father and son were arrested and spent the night in jail together.

SUNDAY, FEB. 3

Elderly wheelchair-bound man sexually harasses teenager

An elderly man in a wheelchair offered to perform oral sex on a 17-year-old who was sitting on a bench at the Civic Center Park at around 2 p.m. The suspect was described as 70 to 80 years old with grey hair and a European accent. A detective followed up the next day and was able to identify the suspect. Charges were forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office.

MONDAY, FEB. 4

Resident attacks 68-year-old collecting recyclables

A 52-year-old resident of Peacock Place began yelling at a 68-year-old man collecting recyclables in the area at around 7:05 p.m. The victim got scared when the resident began yelling at him and tried to run away. Rather than call the cops, the resident chased the victim and kicked him in the chest. The victim fell to the ground and cut his hands. Witnesses saw a large amount of blood coming from the victim and called the cops. Officers responded to the scene and arrested the suspect.

TUESDAY, FEB. 5

Laptop stolen at gunpoint in Chevy’s parking lot

A man stopped at the Chevy’s in Union Landing to use the rest room, leaving his computer bag on the passenger seat at about 12:43 p.m. When he returned to his five minutes later, he saw a man had just smashed the passenger side window of his car. The confronted the suspect, who pointed a handgun at the victim. The suspect then got into a dark blue newer model SUV with tinted windows and paper license plates and fled the area. Responding officers searched for the vehicle but could not locate it.
