Police Log: Drunk Drivers Arrested, Shots Fired at Teddy Drive Home

The latest police log contains reports of multiple drunk driving arrests and a report of shots fired a home, among other incidents.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note. Dated Jan. 5, the log contains incidents that occurred from Dec. 29 to Jan. 3. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, Dec. 29

Drunk driver almost crashes into police officer

An officer was traveling south on Almaden Boulevard when another vehicle crossed into his lane. The officer swerved to avoid a collision then made a U-turn to catch up to the suspect vehicle. The suspect failed to stop for the officer’s lights and siren and continued to a residence on Shield Drive where he parked his vehicle, the report said. The officer then contacted the driver and noticed that he appeared to under the influence of alcohol. After a series of field sobriety tests, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Later in the night, officers were sent to investigate a single vehicle accident into a fence near Cesar Chavez Middle School. Arriving officers located the driver, who attempted to flee on foot, the report said. The driver was intoxicated and arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and hit and run.

Friday, Dec. 30

Man arrested with 30 grams of marijuana in vehicle

On Friday night, an officer observed a vehicle traveling in the area of 6th Street near E Street. The officer made an enforcement stop for a vehicle code violation. According to the report, the officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle when he approached the car. After a series of field sobriety tests, the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of marijuana. A search of the vehicle revealed 30.2 grams of marijuana as well as additional evidence linking the driver to possession of marijuana for sales, the report said. No charges were brought against the two passengers as they were sober and able to get a ride home.

Shots fired at Teddy Drive home

Later in the night, officers responded to a home on the 100 block of Teddy Drive to investigate a report of shots being fired into a home. Arriving officers found the tenants safe but did locate bullet holes into the garage, the report said. Officers recovered some evidence at the scene but the unknown suspect(s) fled prior to police arrival.

Tuesday, Jan. 3

Man shot in arm while walking home

On Tuesday night, an officer responded to a local hospital to investigate an armed robbery in which the victim was shot in the arm. The victim said that he and his brother were walking on Whipple Road near 2nd Street when they were confronted by two armed suspects demanding their property. The victims fought back, which resulted in the victim being shot in the arm. Both the victims and the suspects fled the area and the victim was transported to a local hospital by a family member for treatment.
