Police Log: Cold Case Arrest, Drug Arrests, Church Vandalism

Last week's police log contains reports of an arrest made in an 1983 homicide case, multiple drug violations and a hate crime at St. Anne's Catholic Church.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated Feb. 23 and released Feb. 28, the log contains incidents that occurred from Feb. 16 – 24. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, Feb. 16

Police make arrest in 1983 homicide

Union City detectives arrested a subject in connection to a 1983 homicide after much additional investigation. On May 9, 1983, officers discovered the remains of the victim in an abandoned vehicle on Almaden Boulevard. With the help of modern technology and DNA evidence, detectives pieced the case together and obtained an arrest warrant. The suspect was arrested at his current home in Santa Clara without incident and is currently in custody awaiting trial.

Saturday, Feb. 18

Wife arrested for domestic battery of husband

On Saturday night, officers responded to a residence on Kona Circle to investigate a domestic disturbance. Arriving officers spoke to the female subject at the residence who claimed her husband had assaulted her then fled the residence prior to police arrival. The husband later responded to the police department to make a statement. Officers found that he had actually been the victim of the domestic battery and had suffered injuries to the top of his head as a result of the attack. Officers responded back to the residence and arrested the wife on suspicion of domestic battery.

Man arrested for possession of heroin

Also in the night, an officer on routine patrol saw a subject he recognized from previous contacts in the area of 4th and D streets. The officer tried to contact him, but turned and walked away while discarding several small bindles on the ground. The officer detained him and recovered the bindles, which contained heroin. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing of a controlled substance.

Drunk driver arrested after speeding out of Logan parking lot

Later this same night, officers were sent to investigate an alarm at James Logan High School. The first arriving officer noticed a vehicle driving out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Believing the occupants may be involved in the alarm call, the officer stopped the vehicle. The driver was obviously intoxicated and arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Sunday, Feb. 19

Probationer arrested for possession of cocaine

On Sunday night, an officer on routine patrol in the area of the 30000 block of Industrial Parkway made an enforcement stop of a vehicle for a vehicle code violation. The driver and passenger were on searchable probation. The driver was found to be in possession of .3 grams of cocaine and arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance. The passenger was released at the scene.

Wednesday, Feb. 23

St. Anne’s church vandalized with Satanic graffiti

On Wednesday morning, an officer responded to St. Anne’s Catholic Church located at 32223 Cabello Street to investigate a hate crime vandalism to the church. Several satanic symbols were spray painted on the walls to the church and onto statues on the church grounds. A large wooden cross was also broken at its base.
