Police Log: Blimp Training Causes Scare, 13 Cars Vandalized in One Night and Drug-Related Arrests

Also in this week's police log, a man and woman are arrested with 20 pounds of weed, a pair tries to steal from Decoto Rite Aid and a suspected DUI driver is caught with a concealed dagger.

Thursday, March 1

Police Find Cocaine in Pocket of Man Arguing With Wife

Find out what's happening in Union Citywith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Officers responded to the 33000 block of 5th Street to a report of a domestic assault and found a couple arguing loudly. The pair said they were arguing in front of their children when they decided to take a walk to argue away from them. Officers found .7 grams of suspected cocaine in the man’s pocket and arrested the man on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance.

Man Screaming in Street Leads to Arrest

Officers responded near Alvarado Boulevard and Dyer Street to a report of a man screaming and saw the man acting bizarre. Police learned the man was under the influence of methamphetamine and he was arrested.

Man With Warrant Reaches For Knife During Traffic Stop

An officer tried to stop a car for a traffic violation around Alvarado Boulevard and Galaxy Drive. When the officer stopped the driver, the officer learned the driver had a warrant for an arrest. While trying to arrest the man, the driver tried to get a hold of a pocketknife he was carrying but the officer stopped him. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, methadone pills and drug paraphernalia.

Man Arrested For Strangling Wife

Officers investigated a domestic dispute between a married couple on the 32000 block of Darlene Way and learned the couple had been arguing for days. Police arrested the man on suspicion of domestic battery when it was learned that the arguments escalated that night and the man began to beat and strangle his wife. The woman was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

K-9 and Police Capture Suspect Who Flees From Stolen Car

Two officers were conducting a special enforcement operation when they saw a vehicle driving without headlines near Whipple Road and Ithica Drive. The officers tried to pull him over but the driver failed to stop. The two occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and the officers pursued them with the belief that the car was stolen. A police K-9 found one of the suspects in the backyard of a home but the man began to fight with the K-9 and officers. He was taken to a local hospital after resisting treatment from paramedics on the scene. He was later booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, resisting arrest, trespassing and threatening a police officer.

Saturday, March 3

Man Bikes Around Town on Meth

Police officers spotted a bicyclist riding without proper lighting equipment around Whipple Road and Knapp Avenue and later found he was under the influence of methamphetamine and arrested him.

Two DUI Arrests

Two officers working a DUI special enforcement saw a vehicle straddling between two lanes around Whipple Road and Huntwood Avenue. The woman driver failed to perform field sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Another officer on duty saw a driver in a car make a turn so fast onto Whipple Road from Ithica Street that the car fishtailed. The officer pulled the car over and the man who was driving failed sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Suspected DUI Driver Caught With Dagger, Burglary Tools

Police tried to stop a suspected drunk driver on Mission Boulevard and King Avenue but the driver wasn’t drunk. Still, police found that the person had a concealed dagger and burglary tools with him. He was arrested and booked into Fremont Jail.

Sunday, March 4

Pair Found To Be on Meth By WalMart

An officer contacted two people in the area of Dyer Street near the entrance driveway and saw that the pair seemed to be under the influence of a controlled substance. The officer evaluated them and learned they were under the influence of methamphetamine and arrested them both.

Thirteen Cars Vandalized

Thirteen vehicles on Gemini Way were found vandalized overnight. Most of the damage consisted of paint and window scratchings along the passenger sides of the vehicles.

Monday, March 5

Rite-Aid Robbery

Police responded to on Decoto Road after it was reported that a person entered the store and tried to steal property. Police said a member of the store’s Loss Prevention team tried to detain the person in front of the store when a woman drove her vehicle up onto the sidewalk almost hitting the Loss Prevention officer. The first suspect was able to escape and the pair fled in the car, but the person who entered the store left behind evidence that identified both suspects. Police have forwarded the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.

Tuesday, March 6

Slow Driver Caught With Stolen Checks, Burglary Tools

Police spotted a vehicle traveling on Whipple Road 10 MPH below the posted speed limit and weaving in and out of the lane. When officers pulled the driver over, they learned the man was not drunk but was on searchable probation. While searching the car, they found stolen checks and burglary tools. The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property and burglary tools.

Pair Caught With 20 Pounds Of Weed While Smoking Weed

An Oakland man and an Arcata woman were arrested on suspicion of felony possession for sales and transportation of marijuana after police saw a suspicious car behind the Denny’s restaurant at 30163 Industrial Pkwy. and found the pair smoking marijuana inside the car. Police found 20 pounds of marijuana and 17.37 grams of hash. The pair was booked into Fremont Jail.

Wednesday, March 7

Blimp Training Causes Scare

Police received a call from the U.S. Coast Guard that a blimp-type airship flying over Union City was in distress, losing power and going to crash in Union City. Officers saw the blimp in the area over Central Avenue and saw that it appeared to be nose diving. As the blimp continued to lose altitude, police units readied for what they believed to be a crash landing when they received word that the blimp was not actually in trouble. Instead, the blimp’s crew was conducting a training exercise and failed to advise local authorities.
