Police Log: Auto Theft Suspects Arrested; More Cemetery Headstones Vandalized

Reports also include a victim robbed by an acquaintance, an Applebee's employee assaulting a co-worker, and home burglaries, among others.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the Union City Police Department. The document contains only items of note that occurred July 26 to 31. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Thursday, July 26

Shorebird Drive home burglarized.

A resident of a house on the 31000 block of Shorebird Drive reported that unknown suspect(s) burglarized his residence sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. The suspect(s) made entry to the residence via an unsecured doggie door.

Applebee’s employee arrested after fight with co-worker

At about 10 p.m., two employees at the restaurant located at 30980 Dyer St. got into an argument that escalated into a fight. One of the parties ran away and officers located the suspect hiding nearby. After sorting out the details of this incident, one of the subjects was arrested on suspicion of battery.

Victim robbed by acquaintance

At about 10:54 p.m., a victim received a call from an acquaintance asking he if could borrow money to go home. The victim agreed to give the suspect $4 and to meet him at the located at 2609 Decoto Rd. When the suspect arrived, he brandished what appeared to be a handgun and demanded all of victim’s property. The suspect then fled on his bicycle toward Perry Road.

Friday, July 27

Parolee found with meth in car

An officer on routine patrol in the area of Alvarado-Niles Road and Dyer Street observed a vehicle with expired registration and made an enforcement stop. During the stop, the driver was determined to be on parole and, as a result, the officer conducted a search. The officer located 2.1 grams of methamphetamine and arrested the driver.

Saturday, July 28

Prowler arrested

A resident on the 2400 block of Clover Street reported that a man rang her doorbell and, when the resident did not answer the door, climbed over the fence into the backyard. The suspect fled the area prior to police arrival. Arriving officers detained the suspect nearby and eventually arrested him on suspicion of prowling.

Auto theft suspects arrested

At about 4 a.m., officers responded to a suspicious circumstance call in the area of at the west end of Horner Street. The reporting party stated that subjects were leaving in a white truck. An officer spotted the vehicle on 31000 block of Union City Boulevard and made an investigative stop. It was determined that the vehicle was stolen out of the city of San Leandro. The officers arrested the driver and passenger on suspicion of auto theft and possession of stolen property.

Sunday, July 29

Drunk driver arrested

At about 2:15 a.m., an officer on routine patrol in the area of Dyer Street near Ratekin Drive saw a vehicle driving erratically and made an enforcement stop. The officer had the driver perform field sobriety tests and based upon the results, arrested him under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Tuesday, July 31

More Chapel of the Chimes headstones vandalized

On Tuesday, the Chapel of the Chimes reported more than 33 gravestones had been vandalized with an oil-based product. The case is very similar to .

Basswood Avenue home burglarized

Later this night, a resident on the 33000 block of Basswood Avenue reported that his home had been burglarized sometime between July 18 and July 31. The suspect(s) made entry by lifting the rear sliding glass door off of its tracks.
