Police Log: Another Shooting in Decoto, Four Arrested in 2008 Homicide, 500 Marijuana Plants Found in Grow Operation

A man was critically wounded in a shooting on the 600 block of Whipple Road, four individuals were arrested in connection to a 2008 murder at Kennedy Park and one household gave "going green" a new meaning.

The following is a collection of reports prepared by the . The document contains only items of note. Dated July 1, the log contains incidents that occurred June 24 to July 1. Reports have been lightly edited for Patch style.

Friday, June 24

Accident causes gas leak

A car lost control on Miramonte Way, knocking over a natural gas meter and causing a leak. Officers on scene requested Alameda County Fire and PG&E to respond.  A command post was set up a safe distance away while all available officers evacuated the immediate neighborhood. No one was injured as a result of the collision or the gas leak. Within two hours, PG&E was able to shut off the natural gas and allow people to return to their homes.

Man arrested on suspicion of burglary

Hayward PD requested assistance Saturday night regarding a report of an in-progress prowler or burglar at a home near the Union City-Hayward border on Lafayette Street. A Union City officer and his K-9 partner found the suspect hiding in a backyard. The suspect surrendered without incident, according to the report.

Sunday, June 26

Man critically wounded in Decoto shooting

Union City police responded to the 600 block of Whipple Road about 8:30 p.m. after receiving multiple reports of shots fired. Responding officers found a 22-year-old Union City man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Alameda County Fire Department also responded to the scene and paramedics provided aide before transporting the victim to a local hospital for treatment. Man robbed while walking on Decoto Road

An officer was sent to investigate a robbery that occurred in the area of Decoto Road near Union Square. The victim told police that he was walking home from BART when he was confronted by two suspects who stood in front of him blocking his path. The suspects demanded that he give them a ring from his finger. When the victim objected, both suspects reached into their pockets and simulated a firearm, according to the report. Fearing they may be armed, the victim handed over his ring. The suspects ran to an awaiting car and fled.

500 marijuana plants retrieved in  “grow” house

A landlord contacted members of the Community Policing and Problem Solving Unit, voicing concerns of suspicious activity at his rental home on Klondike Drive. The landlord was told the renters were out of the country, and asked officers to accompany him while he conducted an inspection of the property.

The landlord found that the locks were changed and had to have a locksmith open the front door. The landlord and officers found that the home had been converted to an indoor nursery and contained approximately 500 marijuana plants, according to the report. Elaborate lighting and water systems were installed inside. This case was taken over by the Major Crimes Task Force for follow up.

Thursday, June 30

More than $4,000 worth of fireworks stolen

Officers investigated two thefts of fireworks from a lot being used for storage by American Promotional Events, the fireworks promoter for Alameda County cities Union City, Newark and Dublin. The lot contains several hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of fireworks, according to the report. Though the lot is staffed by security guards, it was reported that 31 fireworks display boxes worth approximately $4,178 were taken over the past two days, the report states. There was no suspect information.

Friday, July 1

Four arrested on suspicion of murder

Starting around 7:30 a.m., the combined Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team from Union City and Newark, as well as the SWAT Team from Fremont served two search warrants related to ongoing investigations of gangs, violence and drugs on Seventh Street and Crest Lane and took two subjects into custody, one at each location, according to the report.

The teams then served five arrest warrants for a 2008 Kennedy Park homicide, arresting four individuals. For the full Union City Patch report, click .
